Real Madrid 2-1 Manchester United
Goals from Casemiro and Isco gave Real Madrid a big win against Manchester United tonight, prompting Los Blancos fans to dream of another trophy laden season.
Of all the pre-season football games this one means the most. The Champions League winners meet the Europa League champions to contest the International Champions Cup. But this one had extra meaning with the mutual respect of these two European giants, not to mention Jose Mourinho facing his former club.
The betting odds had Real as an even bet to win it and, in reality, they were streets ahead of Jose’s team.
After his representatives debunked any rumour that he may be leaving Madrid, for Manchester or anywhere else, Gareth Bale started and tested the United defence in the early stages. And as Los Blancos clicked into gear Casemiro came close on 17 minutes, his header crashing back off the crossbar.
But the Brazilian forward did strike on 24, volleying past David de Gea to put Real Madrid ahead. Los Blancos continued to boss possession. Bale thought he’d made it two six minutes later but the offside flag went up against Karim Benzema in the build up.
It was more of the same in the second half and Isco doubled the Spaniards lead after a delightful one-two with Bale. And then Bale crashed the bar on the hour after Real cut through the United defence again; but the Red devils were back in it a minute later when Romelu Lukaku was on hand to poke home after Nemanja Matic forced a save from Keylor Navas.
United pressed more in the final twenty minutes but without real threat as Real saw the game out comfortably.
Now it’s time for business.
