It’s been a blue Christmas in the EPL and it looks like being another happy blue year in 2017.
The Blues of Leicester won our hearts and the league in 2016 in the face of astronomical betting odds. And the Blues of Chelsea march on into 2017, matching Arsenal’s record of winning 13 consecutive Premier League football games.
Chelsea 4-2 Stoke City
Willian’s brace was the difference between these two sides as the Potters put up a brave fight against rampant Chelsea. Gary Cahill opened the scoring and Diego Costa capped another brilliant performance while scorer Peter Crouch was excellent for Stoke.
Leicester City 1- 0 West Ham United
The Foxes looked like their old selves to win a vital three points, putting their bodies on the line and breaking with menace. A wonderful cross by Marc Albrighton was headed powerfully home by Islam Slimani to get the King Power Stadium rocking. Leicester move six points clear of danger.
Arsenal 2-0 Crystal Palace
Olivier Giroud’s spectacular scorpion kick may well be the goal of the season but more importantly for the Gunners it keeps them in the hunt. Crystal Palace, under new boss Sam Allardyce, will be harder to beat but on this occasion Arsenal simply had too much quality.
Watford 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur
A 14-minute blitz wiped the Hornets away as Spurs went 3-0 up at the break, and a minute after it was four when Dele Alli and Harry Kane had completed a brace each. These two are in a rich vein of form but Watford’s indifferent form continues.
Manchester United 2-1 Middlesbrough
Jose Mourinho had kind words for his big buddy, Boro boss Aitor Karanka, but not for the ref as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s first half effort was ruled out for a high kick. Grant Leadbitter thought he’d made the Red Devils pay dearly, but late goals from Antony Martial and Paul Pogba grabbed all three points.
Southampton 1 -2 West Brom
Shane Long’s goal against his old club gave the Saints a deserved lead which lasted only a couple of minutes before Matt Phillips dragged the Baggies level. As fear began to creep into the home side’s play, Hal Robson Kanu crashed a winner high into the Southampton net.
Burnley 4-1 Sunderland
What a week for Andre Gray! The Burnley hit-man made it four for the week with a superbly taken hat-trick against the woeful Black Cats. Ashley Barnes added a fourth from the spot before Jermain Defoe grabbed a consolation. Sunderland desperately need to keep hold of Defoe in January.
Hull City 2-2 Everton
Mike Phelan’s Tigers fought hard for a point and moved off the bottom of the table thanks to a sublime free-kick and all round performance from Robert Snodgrass. Everton were below par throughout the tussle but Ross Barkley saved the Toffees’ blushes as time ran out.
Swansea 0-3 Bournemouth
The Swans are rock bottom and the Welsh club looks increasingly like a basket case having sacked their second manager in half a season. Eddie Howe’s Cherries were the latest club to take advantage with Benik Afobe setting the ball rolling. 2017 may not be such a happy year for Swansea, but the sun always shines in Bournemouth.
