Scotland 0-1 Netherlands
Memphis Depay scored the only goal of the game to give Dick Advocaat’s Netherlands a confidence-boosting win in Aberdeen.
Friendly football games aren’t always too meaningful, but be assured that a fourth win in four spells real progress for the Dutch. Betting tips suggested this should be an away win against an inexperienced Scotland with a temporary boss. But the Scots put up a fight, as you’d expect, regardless of what the betting odds were saying.
This might well be the only game Malky Mackay has in the Scotland hot seat after Gordon Strachan’s departure, and his team didn’t let him down: they had the better of the game in the early exchanges. But it was the one moment of incisiveness, on 40 minutes, which made the difference. Depay started the move in midfield, feeding Georginio Wijnaldum. The Liverpool man made a quick run before passing wide to Ryan Babel who crossed for Depay to finish at the back post.
Scotland had chances of their own: Ryan Fraser came close on 73 minutes but his shot went narrowly wide. The missed shot was to be the Netherland’s night. There’s been a rebuilding job going on for some time in Holland, and now the master, Dick Advocaat, seems to be making some progress.
The inventors of Total Football have missed two finals for the first time since the nineties. I’m sure we’ll see them back in the twenties.
