There was plenty of drama and action in the quarter-final football games of DFB Pokal, but in the end, it was the online betting favourites who reigned supreme.
Bayern Munich, particularly, displayed their might and sent a message to their Cup rivals by thrashing live betting underdogs Paderborn.
Paderborn 0-6 Bayern Munich
The writing was on the wall for third-tier club Paderborn after the Bavarians rampaged to a 3-0 lead in the first half. Kingsley Coman, Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich were all on target as Bayern head into the second with a comfortable lead.
Corentin Tolisso added a fourth goal moments after the restart before Arjen Robben bagged two late goals—a 20-yard effort and an easy tap-in into the net—to round out the scoring for the visitors.
Bayern are now headed to their ninth straight semi-finals of the German Cup.
Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 Werder Bremen
Bayer Leverkusen continued their fantastic run this season, staging a stunning comeback to end their Bremen Cup curse and reach the last four for the first time in nine years.
Bremen jumped into a 2-0 lead in less than 10 minutes, courtesy of a Max Kruse spot-kick and an Aron Johannsson lob on eight minutes. However, with their backs against the wall, Bayer responded and ground out a win.
Julian Brandt sparked the Bayer turnaround, scoring a goal each on both ends of the interval to send the game to extra time. Karim Bellarabi headed the hosts in front with less than 10 minutes remaining before turning provider for Kai Havertz to ensure their spot to the next round.
Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 Mainz 05
Mainz have no one to blame but themselves after three blunders cost them the game against Frankfurt. It didn’t help the O-Fives that they ended with ten men after Danny Latza was sent off late in the game.
The Eagles took the lead after returning Mainz goalkeeper Rene Adler lost control of a back-pass which opened the door for Marius Wolf to set up a pass to Ante Rebic for the opener.
Mainz tried their best with a more spirited showing in the second half, but an own goal from Alexander Hack and an Omar Mascarell close-range finish put the results beyond doubt.
Schalke 04 1-0 Wolfsburg
All Schalke needed was one goal in a game that saw a fairly uneventful second half.
The Royal Blues caught the Wolves off guard on the counter in the tenth minute, and Guido Burgstaller took his chance and finished off the attack by beating the visiting keeper Koen Casteels.
Yunus Malli and Daniel Didavi had their chances to equalise for Wolfsburg, but Schalke played it safely and held on to progress.
