DFB-Pokal: Round of 16
The German Cup might not have the same lustre as that of the Bundesliga, but with only 16 teams remaining to fight for glory; fans can expect a contest that is more intense than the football games we regularly see.
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are back to delight the online betting community, though they won’t have an easy path to victory with the likes of fellow competitors Wolfsburg, Hertha, Gladbach, Schalke and Frankfurt all looking to sway the betting odds.
Of course, as what we see every year, all eyes will be on defending champions Bayern who are at odds of 1.85 to win the tournament. They will aim to reach the last eight this time as they bid to make another back-to-back – just like their 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 runs.
However, it won’t be as comfortable as they imagined with 2015 Cup winners Wolfsburg (11.00) waiting on the other side of the pitch. Hence, Carlo Ancelotti will need Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller to double their efforts if they want to repeat.
Meanwhile, Dortmund—who were runners-up in the competition for three consecutive years now—will be more than determined to overcome the 4.20 odds and break their curse. Though, they will also be tested early with their match against the Capital club, Hertha.
BVB, nonetheless, are brimming with confidence with the return of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and their victory over Leipzig last Sunday, and they can take advantage of it to secure their ticket to the quarter-finals against the Berliners who are tipped at 41.00 as they still struggle for form.
On the other hand, Koln (31.00) and Gladbach (11.00) have reasonably comfortable fixtures, so they are expected to dominate their away games.
The Billy Goats are up against an inconsistent Hamburg side, and the presence of Anthony Modeste and the ever-dangerous Yuya Osako should be enough for them to bag the victory.
Conversely, Gladbach will be visiting second-division outfit, SpVgg Furth. Although the Shamrocks are predicted to provide some difficult test, Gladbach are still favoured to move on to the next round particularly with their new-found energy on offence under new boss Dieter Hecking.
Top-tier clubs Schalke (11.00) and Frankfurt (31.00), in contrast, have challenging schedules against two 2.Bundesliga clubs. Schalke have a poor away form which will make their visit to Hardtwaldstadion worrying, while Frankfurt will be tussling with Hannover – a team that boasts a strong defence.
Indeed, the DFB-Pokal might not be as highly regarded as the top flight, but this Round of 16 battle promises to be a breathtaking affair, especially with the heavyweights all seeking to make their mark in the second-most important club competition in Germany.
