La Liga has taken on a telling shape this weekend after results widened the gaps at both ends of the table.
Betting odds are now pointing towards a 25th league title for Ernesto Valverde’s Barcelona, after victory over Athletic Bilbao took them 11 clear at the top.
And at the bottom end, Levante had a great weekend as Paco Lopez steered his new team to a vital win over Eibar. Levante’s sports betting fans can confidently back their heroes to survive if they play out their remaining nine football games with such conviction.
Barcelona 2-0 Athletic Bilbao
Leo Messi was on target yet again as Barca dispatched Athletic Club to move well clear at the top of the table. This game was over by the break after Messi added to Paco Alcacer’s opener. That’s 35 matches unbeaten in La Liga for Barcelona, with nine to play to complete a near perfect season.
Villarreal 2-1 Atletico Madrid
A dramatic last ten minutes not only strengthened the Yellow Submarine’s Europa bid but it also virtually put paid to Atletico’s title challenge. An Antoine Griezmann penalty put the visitors in charge for much of the game, but Enes Unal struck on 82 and 91 minutes to break Atleti hearts and then Vitolo’s frustration earned him a red.
Levante 2-1 Eibar
What a priceless win this was for Levante, lifting them six points above the drop zone. Substitute Emmanuel Boateng grabbed the winner after Eibar’s Charles Dias had cancelled out Roger Marti’s opener. Survival is in Lopez’ hands now.
Deportivo La Coruna 1-1 Las Palmas
We thought this one might well end up in a draw but, with Levante winning, the result was no use to either team. Las Palmas struck first through a brilliant individual goal by Alen Halilovic before Raul Albentosa headed the hosts level. Both teams have a big hill to climb now to catch Levante.
Real Madrid 6-3 Girona
Goals galore at the Bernabeu as Los Blancos and Girona put on an exhibition of attacking football. Cristiano Ronaldo scored four for Real while Girona’s Cristhian Stuani scored his 16th and 17th of the season. Not a good day for the defences though!
Valencia 3-1 Alaves
In-form strike partnership Rodrigo and Simone Zaza netted a goal each as Valencia continue their march to the Champions League. Ruben Sobrino pulled one back for the visitors but a Victor Laguardia own goal put paid to any thoughts of a comeback. Alaves are pretty much safe, ten points clear of danger.
Leganes 2-1 Sevilla
When you’ve just cast Manchester United out of the Champions League you can be forgiven for an off day; which was good news for Leganes as they put a tired Sevilla to the sword. Unai Bustinza and Javier Eraso made merry before Miguel Layun grabbed a late consolation for Sevilla.
Real Betis 3-0 RCD Espanyol
Real Betis stay right in the Europa League hunt after a resounding win at home to Espanyol. Junior Firpo headed the hosts into a first-half lead, and then two goals in 13 minutes courtesy of Ryad Boudebouz and Francis Guerrero sealed the deal.
Real Sociedad 1-2 Getafe
This is the fourth time Getafe have won this fixture 2-1 in the last six meetings! Willian Jose had put the hosts ahead, but the home fans must have feared the worst when Djene Dakonam levelled for Getafe; and quite rightly as Angel Rodriguez hit a beauty to continue the 2-1 tradition.
Celta Vigo 0-0 Malaga
Bottom club Malaga earned a rare point away to Celta Vigo, but they remain in a hopeless position 13 points from safety. Celta’s Iago Aspas will still be wondering how he failed to score, denied five times in the last 30 minutes.
