Well, it certainly was this weekend. In the football games featuring the top four teams in Serie A, there were no goals…not a single one!
The top-of-the-table clash drew the first blank. Football betting pundits expected a tight game when Juventus hosted league leaders Inter in Turin and were held to a 0-0 draw. The Bianconeri dominated much of the game, Mario Mandzukic having the most shots at Samir Handanovic’s net, but despite Juve’s 19 efforts on goal, the Inter keeper kept them out to hang on to top spot.
Napoli are just one point behind in second place but will regret not taking its chance to reach the summit after a 0-0 home draw with Fiorentina.
The goalkeepers were in charge in Verona too, where Chievo held Roma to another 0-0 stalemate, home keeper Stefano Sorrentino putting in a man-of-the-match performance. And Lazio spectacularly blew the chance to draw level with Roma when top scorer Ciro Immobile was sent off for violent conduct, moments after he hit a post. Alex Berenguer started the second-half scoring as Torino ran out 1-3 winners against the ten men.
Sampdoria lost a two-goal lead and a chance to make ground on the top five after the in-form Fabio Quagliarella scored a first-half brace against Cagliari, but Diego Farias and Leo Pavoletti gave the visitors a 2-2 draw.
There was good news for Gennaro Gattuso, who recorded his first win as Milan boss with the Rossoneri beating Bologna 2-1, and that after suffering the humiliation of being the first team to drop points to bottom club Benevento. But Benevento couldn’t follow up their opening point from last week, losing 2-0 at Udinese.
Elsewhere, there were was a win for Sassuolo, while strugglers Verona and SPAL shared the points. Atalanta, meanwhile, visit Genoa tomorrow.
