Brazil vs Peru
Brazil takes on Peru at the Los Angeles Stadium on Wednesday, and the fans there deserve a treat, which we can be pretty sure is coming their way.
Chile and Argentina played out a bore draw at this venue on Friday, but the supporters will be back in their droves, because this International Friendly, Brazil vs Peru has more significance than most. The Selecao beat Peru in the Copa America final just two months ago to win their first trophy in 12 years, and that game had it all.
Brazil’s lead was cancelled out by Peru legend Paulo Guererro and then Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus took centre stage, first restoring Brazil’s lead and then by getting himself sent off. Underdogs Peru looked capable of causing an upset against the ten men, but Richarlison sealed Brazil’s first Copa America since 2007.
Head coach Tite is bringing the good times back to the Selecao, who also impressed at the 2018 World Cup.
And this game will mean a lot to Ricardo Gareca’s Peru, who did so well to reach the Copa final, and will relish another chance to beat the Samba Boys.
Talking Points
Copa Surprise Package
Two months is not a long time and Peru’s exploits in the Copa are still fresh in the memory. In amongst the giants of South American football, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Colombia, the Incas weren’t expected to feature in the latter stages but they very nearly went all the way. And their exploits have lifted them up to 19th in the FIFA world rankings, but still some way short of Brazil’s second place.
Seasoned forward Paulo Guerrero and his strike partner Jefferson Farfan’s goals took Peru to the final showdown, but they won’t be in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Vancouver Whitecaps striker Yordy Reyna could make a starting place. The 25-year-old has made 29 appearances in a supporting role to Guerrero and Farfan and now might be his time.
And the real quality in the middle of the park comes from Santos midfielder Christian Cueva who is in his prime at 27.
Brazil’s Mersey Beat
The Selecao fans are more Reggae boys than Beatles, but some of their best players are plying their trade on Merseyside in the Premier League. Liverpool duo, midfield star Fabinho and forward Roberto Firmino are likely to be on show. The striker has 12 international goals to his name from 38 internationals, and he’s recently scored his 50th goal for Liverpool, on target in Liverpool’s win at Burnley last week. Firmino could line up alongside Everton’s Richarlison who, at 22 years old, looks to have a big future with six goals already in 14 games for Brazil.
Neymar’s failure to secure a summer move from Paris has led to fears his mind may not be on the game, but he was on target in the 2-2 draw with Colombia on Saturday and we aren’t going to keep him out of the Brazil vs Peru news!
But there will be no Gabriel Jesus in the side. The Manchester City striker has been suspended from international games for two months following his conduct in the Copa America final. The 22-year-old has also been fined $30,000 for his actions which included making gestures which implied the referee had been paid off.
History
With five World Cups and 11 Copa America titles, Brazil is South American football royalty, and with yet another side packed with talent they rightly expect to dominate every time they step onto the pitch.
Los Incas have a more humble record, having participated at the World Cup finals five times, most recently at Russia 2018, and they have won the Copa America twice, in 1939 and 1975.
The Selecao has had much the better of the meetings between these two sides, winning 39 and drawing nine, while Peru has won just four.
Betting Tip
Brazil vs Peru | Brazil Asian Handicap -1.25 @ 1.96 | |
September 11, 11:00 (GMT+8) |
The latest pre-match Brazil vs Peru betting odds here at SBOBET don’t suggest that trend is about to change, with Brazil at 1.40, the draw at 4.20 and Peru at 7.60.
With undoubted quality up front and, after a frustrating summer, Neymar seemingly happy in the yellow jersey, I think the Selecao will once again have too much for the Incas, who are relying on a new-look forward line.
Peru is 1.96 with that +1.25 start; so a 2-0 or 3-1 win for Brazil might well be on the cards.
But for an alternative bet, Brazil to be ahead by the half time break is at odds of 2.02.
