The hopeful chasers are still just in touch, but Juventus could take another big step towards retaining the Serie A title when they play before Roma and Napoli at the weekend.
Roma are at betting odds of 11.00 and Napoli at 32.00 to shock the Old Lady come the season’s end, and both are determined to keep hold of a Champions League place.
WEEK 31 SATURDAY:
Empoli vs Pescara
It’s squeaky bum time for 17th-placed Empoli, on a run of seven consecutive defeats and now just five points above the drop zone, where two of the bottom three, seemingly doomed a few weeks ago have begun picking up points. Pescara are the least likely to escape but had a fantastic draw with Milan this week and could spring another surprise.
WEEK 31 SUNDAY:
Juventus vs Chievo
There may be little value in Juve fans betting on a title win, but there are great handicap betting options every week. The Bianconeri is at 1.83 to beat Chievo with a -1.50 goals handicap. The visitors have lost three in four and will face a hungry Gonzalo Higuain, who bagged a vital brace against Napoli to send Juventus through to the Coppa final this week.
Atalanta vs Sassuolo
Atalanta’s verve this season, characterised by 14-goal Alejandro Gomez, has carried Gian Piero Gasperinis’s team to within six points of a Champions League spot and well on course for Europa at least. The fifth-placed hosts will have too much thrust for a Sassuolo team that is safe but on a run of three consecutive losses.
Bologna vs AS Roma
Luciano Spalletti has said his team need to get over the derby cup defeat quickly and focus on the league, so record scorer Edin Dzeko and chums will surely respond at Bologna. The hosts should already be on the beach with little to play for but did thump Chievo 4-1 last time at the Renato Dall’Ara, so they may put up a challenge.
Crotone vs Inter Milan
Despite Mauro Icardi’s 20-goal return, Inter have stuttered over the last two games and are three points behind Atalanta and a Europa place. Crotone were one of the seemingly doomed three, but a win against Chievo last week has brought 17th place into view. Not an ideal time for Stefano Pioli’s men to visit.
AC Milan vs Palermo
The Rossoneri sit a single point behind their Milan rivals and with three home wins on the bounce, will plan to tear into a Palermo team on a run of four defeats and seven points from safety.
Sampdoria vs Fiorentina
Eighth visits ninth in a meeting of two in-form sides. While Sampdoria must settle for a strong mid-table finish, the Viola have re-ignited hopes of a European return. On a run of three consecutive wins, the visitors have more to play for but won’t have it all their own way.
Cagliari vs Torino
This mid-table clash could be full of goals. Forty of the 60 games these two have participated in this season have yielded over 2.5 goals. Andrea Belotti has been on fire for Torino and is currently joint top scorer with Dzeko on 23.
Udinese vs Genoa
Three of the last four clashes between Udinese and Genoa have resulted in a 1-1 draw, but I’d be amazed if we get a repeat on Sunday. The hosts are in decent form on an unbeaten run of four; but Genoa will be happy they have points in the bag, having lost the last three including a 5-0 thrashing by Atalanta.
WEEK 31 MONDAY:
Lazio vs Napoli
Lazio have a spring in their step having ousted fierce rivals Roma from the Coppa; and while Napoli went out in the semi-final, they did beat Juve in their second leg, having held the Champions to a draw in the league last week. This is the game of the weekend and could go any way with Lazio at 2.83, Napoli 2.45 and the draw at 3.25.
