Football games in Italy rarely get bigger than this. When Milan heads to Turin this weekend and the two giants of Serie A clash, the fallout could be immense.
Milan were the last club to lift the Scudetto, in 2011, before the Bianconeri embarked on their run of six titles. This season, Max Allegri’s team are odds on with betting websites to make it seven. So Gennaro Gattuso’s Milan can do themselves and Napoli a big favour by frustrating the Old Lady.
This big match is saved for last this Weel 30 so let’s start with the Italian football actions elsewhere.
WEEK 30 SATURDAY:
Bologna vs AS Roma
Five wins in six have lifted Roma to third and they look in good shape to qualify again for the Champions League. Bologna are pretty much safe, and ended a two-match losing run with an impressive draw at Lazio before the international break. The hosts are at 2.04 to win with a +0.75 goal start while Roma is 1.89 with that handicap.
Inter Milan vs Hellas Verona
Inter are in the final Champions League spot having given Sampdoria a hiding in their last outing. Mauro Icardi scored four in a 0-5 win and that takes him to 22 for the season. Two wins in the last three have given 19th placed Verona some hope, but they may have to wait another week for any more points.
Lazio vs Benevento
Failure to beat Bologna means Lazio dropped out of the top four, but they should keep the heat up by beating bottom club Benevento. League top scorer Ciro Immobile will be hungry as ever, having missed good chances against England in Italy’s 1-1 draw.
Genoa vs SPAL
SPAL are the chief beneficiary of Crotone’s slump, unbeaten in four and now in the coveted 17th place. The newcomers even held Juventus to a draw before the break so Genoa won’t hold any fears. A winning run did lift the hosts away from trouble, but three consecutive defeats mean they still need a couple of wins.
Fiorentina vs Crotone
Three consecutive wins have probably come too late for the Viola to trouble the top six, but they will want to finish the season strongly. The situation is more urgent for Crotone, a good run had lifted them out of the drop zone, but they are back in it after three defeats in four.
Cagliari vs Torino
Cagliari are currently doing enough, five points above the trap-door with two wins and two draws from the last six. The visitors could be there for the taking, 14 points behind sixth, 12 above the drop and on a run of four defeats. These could be the longest ten games in Torino’s history!
Atalanta vs Udinese
Six points behind Milan, Atalanta have a lot to do to improve on their current seventh place, though Josip Ilicic is doing his best, taking his season tally to ten with a hat-trick as Atalanta thumped Verona 0-5 recently. Udinese’s defeat to Sassuolo was their fifth in succession so the visitors are thankful of a nine point cushion to the drop.
WEEK 30 SUNDAY:
Chievo vs Sampdoria
Sampdoria was looking good for a Europa slot not long ago, but back-to-back defeats, the second that massacre at the hands of Inter and Icardi, has rather blown the wind from their sales. All of which is some comfort for Chievo, a single point above the drop and on its own run of three losses.
Sassuolo vs Napoli
It’s been 28 years since Napoli won the title and the Old Lady might well make them wait another but Maurizio Sarri’s stars can only do what they can, on this occasion winning at Sassuolo. The hosts are in trouble in 15th, but won in Udinese last time out to stay three points above the drop.
Juventus vs AC Milan
Finally for the match in focus. Victory for Juventus will be a huge step to the title; and strike partnership Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain have more goals to add to their 32, in sight. Former Juve defender Leonardo Bonucci knows them well which could help Milan as the Rossoneri continues their assault on the top four. Milan are at 2.17 to win or draw.
