Atletico Madrid vs Real Valladolid
The action continues to heat up in La Liga as we approach towards the conclusion of the ongoing 2019/20 season.
Barcelona and Real Madrid are playing catch-and-mouse against each other in hopes of securing this season’s championship while the other teams are either jostling for position or trying to survive in the Spanish top-flight.
Atletico Madrid is one of those clubs who are trying to secure their Champions League spot while the same can’t be said for Real Valladolid as they are looking to avoid the relegation zone.
Diego Simeone’s men currently sit at the fourth spot with 49 points while Real Valladolid have a lot of catching up to do with 33 points – good for 14th place.
With this game to be held at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, our betting odds point to an easy win for Atletico Madrid. However, looking at their recent encounters, this might be closer than most would think.
In the reverse fixture last October 2019, both of these clubs were held to a goalless draw while Atletico Madrid escaped with a 1-0 win few months earlier thanks to a timely goal by Joaquin Fernandez – who is now playing, ironically, for Valladolid this term.
Without further ado, here is our match preview ahead of this weekend.
Talking Points
Atletico Madrid firing on all cylinders
Diego Simeone’s men have been on a roll ever since they dumped Liverpool out in the Champions League right before the mandated hiatus.
Upon returning to La Liga action, Los Rojiblancos drew level against Athletic Bilbao when they visited them in San Mames. However, just last night, Atleti unleashed a performance for the ages against Osasuna.
Atletico Madrid’s struggles on the attack were well-documented all season so it was refreshing to see their performance last night. Since losing Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona, Diego Simeone’s collection of misfiring and injured strikers just couldn’t get it done.
Joao Felix, who was expected to light up La Liga this term, has only notched eight goals and two assists. He has been hobbled with knee and ankle injuries which surely affected his overall form.
Atleti’s top scorer as of the moment is Alvaro Morata, who has registered 12 goals and two assists as of this writing. Angel Correa has been their midfield ace with five goals and six assists.
But what really makes Los Rojiblancos a formidable team is their backline. Led by the highly-talented goalkeeper Jan Oblak, Atleti have only conceded 22 goals this campaign.
Speaking of Oblak, the Slovenia international hit a big milestone in La Liga by being the fastest to reach the century mark of clean sheets after his team’s demolition of Osasuna last Wednesday evening – tallying 100 clean sheets in just 182 appearances.
There is no shortage of quality in Diego Simeone’s squad. And if they can continue to have more games fielding in a complete roster, Atleti is surely a force to be reckoned with.
Real Valladolid struggling to score
A big reason why Real Valladolid is struggling as of late is because of their lacklustre attack.
They currently are the second worst team in La Liga on that regard, scoring only 25 goals after 29 matchdays already.
Unlike most clubs, team manager Sergio don’t have the luxury of having options that can provide the much-needed goals.
Their leading goalscorer is Sergi Guardiola with six goals and two assists. He is followed by Enes Unal with five goals and two assists.
Other than those two, there isn’t much to look at with their current roster. In what should be one of their main strengths this season, their central midfield has been subpar all season.
Ruben Alcaraz only got to score his second goal of the season against Leganes few days ago, which epitomises Valladolid’s limitations as a side.
History
Atletico Madrid have dominated Real Valladolid in their overall head-to-head matchups.
In their 32 encounters, Atleti won in 20 — which includes winning eight of the last 10 — while Valladolid won in eight along with four draws.
While neither are really known to score goals in bunches at least for this campaign, they were able to do the opposite each time they lock horns as they’ve averaged 2.81 goals per match between them.

Here in the 1×2 market, Atletico Madrid are heavily favoured as they are being priced at 1.41 compared to an underwhelming 8.50 price for Real Valladolid and a draw at 4.10.
This is expected given the quality disparity between these two squads and with Atleti playing at home.
However, the pressure is more on to Atleti since grabbing points will be crucial to their Champions League hopes next year. So if Real Valladolid can spring an upset this Saturday, it would be a huge morale booster on their end.
