Leganes vs Atletico Madrid
Atletico Madrid are headed to Butarque where they’ll face Leganes in the third week of the ongoing La Liga.
Los Rojiblancos started the season on a good note after a tight win against Getafe CF on the curtain-raiser while Leganes are eager to bounce back after a demoralising loss versus Osasuna.
The Diego Simeone-coached squad is looking for a breakthrough after back-to-back maiden finishes against arch-rivals FC Barcelona, and stringing together a couple of wins would be helpful in their cause.
Meanwhile, Leganes will try to remain competitive after achieving their best season in La Liga’s top-flight last year. The Mauricio Pellegrino-mentored club finished 13th at the table last term and they’ll fight for survival once more to avoid relegation.
Today, SBOBET gives you a quick preview on this upcoming fixture on Sunday, August 25.
Talking Points
Can Atletico Madrid finally go all the way this time?
Team manager Diego Simeone still hasn’t figured out the Barca puzzle last term, which is why the team made moves and signed some shiny, new pieces to revamp their roster.
Last year’s standouts Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin, Rodri, and Juanfran have already departed the club and new cogs have arrived in their place. They signed Marcos Llorente, Alvaro Morata, and Joao Felix – whose debut for Atleti is something to watch out for.
Other than those players — Atleti still managed to hold on to Jan Oblak –who has been superb at the goalkeeper post. He may arguably be one of the top five goalkeepers in the world right now and he will be tasked to marshal Los Rojiblancos’ new-look defence.
After spending over 240 million euros to bolster their roster, Simeone now has all the tools he’ll need at his disposal. It will be up to him on how he’ll find the right mix and balance for his lineups.
Los Rojiblancos have fared pretty well in the pre-season especially since they won all in their last five games. One of their most notable victories was a dominant 7-3 win against city rivals Real Madrid last July.
Atletico Madrid look to be a team on a mission this season, and keeping their good form will be key to a successful season. Anything short of a championship, or even a top-three finish, will be considered as a failure.
Leganes tries to follow up its best season ever
Los Pepineros enjoyed their best ever league finish in the La Liga last season finishing 13th at the table. But the real highlight of that season is the fact that none of the “big three” teams won in their respective visits at the Butarque Stadium.
Last September 2018, Leganes defeated Barcelona in what was a David and Goliath match up. And from there, optimism grew more and more for the Leganes faithful.
Los Pepineros made the most out of the transfer window replacing their departed players. They brought in Roberto Rosales, Jonathan Silva, Oscar Rodriguez, and Fede Varela with guys like Allan Nyom, Mikel Vesga, and club icon Asier Garitano leaving the club.
The one-two punch of Dimitris Siovas and Youssef En-Nesyri will lead the charge for Los Pepineros. Siovas is a reliable centre-back who will captain Leganes’ backline while En-Nesyri will be featured at the forefront for the club’s attack.
Compared to Atleti, expectations are not that high for Mauricio Pellegrino’s team to produce some of the best La Liga 2019 highlights. However, scoring an upset in this match against Los Rojiblancos would be very much ideal.
History
Leganes gained top-flight status in the La Liga three years ago, and both sides have encountered each other in six top-flight matches where Atletico Madrid is undefeated (W3, D3).
All in all, Atletico Madrid and Leganes have faced each other only in 12 matches. Los Rojiblancos won in seven of those while Los Pepineros prevailed in two matches. There have been three games that ended in a draw – all in top-flight.
Los Pepineros’ latest win against Los Rojiblancos dates back to August 2015 with a score of 1-0.
