La Liga: Recent Shock Should Motivate Real Madrid

Real Madrid vs Getafe

Real Madrid ceded the top spot of the La Liga standings to Barcelona after they suffered a shocking 2-1 loss against Osasuna at El Sadar, and Barcelona took care of business against Levante on Matchday 25. However, Los Blancos can take it right back if they win their next game, and if Barca drop points against Athletic Bilbao on the road this Sunday.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s side is up against Getafe on Monday night at the Bernabeu. Real Madrid are fresh from eliminating Benfica in the Champions League knockout play-offs, securing a Round of 16 date with Manchester City, whom they’ll face two weeks from now after the Getafe and Celta Vigo matches in Spain.

Getafe are 13th in the Spanish top-flight table with 29 points, level with 12th-seeded Sevilla, who snapped their unbeaten run. Jose Bordalas’ men had the luxury to prepare for almost a full week against Los Blancos.

Talking Points

Mbappe could be out for a while for Real Madrid

According to reports, Kylian Mbappe had been playing through a knee injury in the past few weeks, with the World Cup next summer on the horizon. However, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa might be forced to sit Mbappe down, as the Frenchman’s condition has grown worse.

Mbappe has already missed several training sessions and sat out some key matches. He completed the full 90 minutes against Osasuna and Benfica this week, but looked limited on the pitch. Arbeloa recently commended Mbappe for his commitment, but the La Liga’s Golden Boot frontrunner should take a rest against Getafe.

Mbappe’s absence is not the only concern for Los Blancos, as they are also without Dean Huijsen (calf), Jude Bellingham (hamstring), Dani Ceballos (calf), Raul Asencio (neck), and Eder Militao (hamstring). Rodrygo is also on the list, but his suspension doesn’t apply in La Liga, and the Brazilian forward, who has been out of action since their 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano earlier this month, could take Mbappe’s spot in the starting XI against Los Azulones.

Vinicius Jr. should continue to lead Real Madrid up front, as he’s the team’s most in-form player. The former Ballon d’Or candidate has accounted for five of Los Blancos’ last eight goals in all competitions.

Getafe are compromised defensively

Getafe have one of the most underrated backlines in La Liga, having conceded only 29 goals so far this season. However, that will be put to the test on Monday against the mighty Real Madrid, since they might be without two of their key defenders.

Defensive midfielder Djene Dakonam received a straight red card in the 26th minute after going in studs up on Gabriel Suazo, and Sevilla exploited Getafe’s numerical disadvantage with Djibril Sow’s goal after the hour mark to secure the win.

Manager Jose Bordalas could replace Djene with Mario Martin in midfield, joining Mauro Arambarri and Luis Milla. Allan Nyom, Diego Rico, or Sebastian Boselli could replace Abdel Abqar in centre half after he sustained a knock last weekend.

History

Real Madrid hold an eight-game winning streak over Getafe in La Liga. In their last four league meetings, Los Blancos didn’t concede a goal while scoring six on the other end. Getafe’s last win in this fixture was a 1-0 outcome in January 2022.

Los Blancos won 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Coliseum Stadium, as Kylian Mbappe scored in the 80th minute with the help of Arda Guler. It didn’t help Los Azulones that they were reduced to nine men late, as Allan Nyom and Alex Sancris received their marching orders in the 77th and 84th minutes. With the narrow win, Real Madrid temporarily took the top spot in the La Liga table.

Betting Tip

The SBOTOP La Liga 2026 odds expect Real Madrid to return to winning ways against Getafe on Monday evening. Los Blancos are 1.31 favourites to take maximum points, while Los Azulones are big 7.80 underdogs, and a draw is at 4.67 in the 1X2 market.

Fatigue will certainly play a factor for the hosts, but they should have enough quality to see this through. However, fans at the Bernabeu shouldn’t expect too many La Liga 2026 highlights from this contest, making alternatives like Under 2.75 at 1.79, Under 2.50 at 2.00, and even Total Goal 0-1 at 3.36 worth adding to the parlay. On the other hand, the Correct Score of 1-0 in favour of Real Madrid – the result of their last two league encounters – offers a tidy payout of 5.80. Any Correct Score having Getafe getting at least one point could yield at least 9.40.
