La Liga: This Seville Derby is Hot, Hot, Hot!

Real Betis vs Sevilla

Sixth faces 10th in the Spanish top-flight this Sunday, but that’s not the half of it as Seville is about to explode into life with one of the country’s biggest derbies.

The city, in the south of the nation, is known as the “Frying Pan of Spain” because of its soaring temperatures in the summer and, while March is more temperate, the Benito Villamarin will be a cauldron of intensity when the two La Liga teams walk out on Sunday evening. Close to 60,000 fans will pack the stadium, most in the green and white of the hosts are hoping the La Liga 2025 betting odds are right, and we see a home win.

Manuel Pellegrini’s Betis are on track to better their seventh-place finish from 2024, while Garcia Pimienta’s Sevilla are going nicely in mid table. While Betis went into the international break on the back of a 3-2 win away to Leganes, Los Sevillistas fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Champions League chasing Athletic Club.

Talking Points

The momentum is with Betis

While the title race is likely to be fought out by the El Clasico pair and Real Betis probably aren’t even in the shake up for a Champions League spot, they are in a great position to qualify for the Europa League. And Pellegrini’s men are thriving in the Europa Conference League with a quarter-final to look forward to after hammering Vitoria 6-2 in the Round of 16.

And Los Verdiblancos went into the break on the back of a thrilling comeback in Madrid, trailing Leganes by two goals before halftime and roaring back with strikes from Isco, Cedric Bakambu, and Cucho Hernandez to turn the match on its head and maintain Betis’ four-point lead over seventh placed Real Mallorca.

Betis have shared the goals around this season with attacking midfielder Gio Lo Celso scoring seven, Isco bagging six from 13 outings, and Manchester United loanee Antony scoring two goals in seven games since arriving in January. With Pablo Fornals joining the attacking unit, this is a team with plenty of creative muscle and enough options to fire them to European success. And with five league wins on the bounce, Pellegrini’s men have gathered some serious momentum at the perfect time.

Pimienta has steadied Sevilla

La Liga: Can Sevilla improve their position with a win against derby rivals Real Betis this weekend?
Sevilla manager Garcia Pimienta reacts during a La Liga clash against Barcelona at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium

After a turbulent couple of years, there is a calmer feel to Sevilla under Pimienta. In each of the last two seasons, the club has changed managers twice during the campaign before eventually escaping relegation, and that has been hard to take for a passionate group of fans who have been used to success in Europe but have spent the last couple of campaigns glancing enviously over to their neighbours.

The visit of Athletic Club just before the break and the resulting defeat came with an added cost of the midfield pair of Lucien Agoume and Djibril Sow picking up yellow cards, which means they will sit this one out. And in other La Liga 2025 news, French centre-back Tanguy Nianzou is missing through injury.

Sevilla are likely to spend much of the game on the back foot, but the Betis defence will know they have been in a match, with 11-goal Dodi Lukebakio linking up with Isaac Romero, a forward who likes to put himself about, and captain Saul Niguez pulling the strings just behind the front two. Sevilla have shown recently how dangerous they can be on the road, beating Real Sociedad 1-0 and slapping Real Valladolid 4-0. But when they visited league favourites Barcelona, Sevilla took a painful 4-1 beating.

History

Over the years, Sevilla have had the better of this huge derby with 27 wins to 11, and there have been 21 draws. When the two teams met earlier in the season, Lukebakio gave Los Sevillistas a 1-0 victory, while Nianzou picked up a late red card.

With five wins and a draw from the last six outings in all competitions, Los Verdiblancos have been in fine form, while Sevilla have been rather more inconsistent with two wins, two draws, and two defeats from their last six.

Betting Tip

Sevilla are available at SBOTOP odds of 3.57 to spring a surprise at the Benito Villamarin, and the draw is at 3.14. But Los Verdiblancos, roared on by a passionate crowd, have momentum and a bigger incentive, so I’m going for a home win.

And, for an alternative long shot bet, a 1-0 win to Betis is at a price of 6.18.
