Midfield star Isco scored in the 90th minute to grab three vital points for Real Madrid after Sporting Gijon gave the leaders the fright of their lives.
The dramatic win brings down the betting odds on La Liga returning to the capital, and with seven league football games to go, El Clasico could go a long way to deciding the outcome next week.
Sporting Gijon 2-3 Real Madrid
Football betting tips expected a rather easier ride for Zinedine Zidane’s stars at relegation-threatened Gijon. But the hosts went ahead twice before Real drew level for what looked to be the second league stalemate in a row. But then with the clock ticking down, Isco arrived on the edge of the box to fire his second of the game.
Barcelona 3-2 Real Sociedad
So Barca knew that anything less than a win would spell disaster. Lionel Messi looked to have taken the game away from Sociedad with a first-half double. He also put Paco Alcacer in for a third, but Sociedad pegged the hosts back twice through a Samuel Umtiti own goal and Xabi Prieto. 3-2 at the break and that’s how it stayed.
Atletico Madrid 3-0 Osasuna
Diego Simeone’s Atletico stay third after a comfortable win over bottom club Osasuna. Yannick Carrasco scored either side of half-time before Filipe Luis made the points safe on the hour. It’s Leicester City up next for Atletico; Segunda Division for Osasuna.
Valencia 0-0 Sevilla
It’s only one win in seven now for Sevilla but fourth place still looks reasonably safe for Jorge Sampaoli. It’s a good point for Valencia though, having now taken ten points from four games to settle nicely in mid-table.
Alaves 2-1 Villarreal
The Yellow Submarine sank as Alaves scored twice before the break. Ibai Gomez hit a beautiful strike and Rodrigo Ely headed a second. Cedric Bakambu pulled one back on 70 minutes and should have equalised at the death.
Athletic Club 5-1 Las Palmas
Las Palmas aren’t the best travellers in the league and so it proved on Saturday as Athletic Club kept their Europa charge on track, moving into sixth place after hammering the Canary Islanders. Iker Muniain and the evergreen Aritz Aduriz helped themselves to a couple each.
Real Betis 2-0 Eibar
Eibar’s Europa aspirations took a bash though, losing to Real Betis, a result which took the hosts up to 14th. Jonas Martin headed Betis in front in only the second minute, but they had to wait until the 89th minute before Dani Ceballos broke away to make the points safe.
Leganes 0-1 Espanyol
Isco’s last-minute winner against Gijon was good news for 17th-placed Leganes who suffered a similar fate when Leo Baptistao brilliantly lobbed Espanyol’s injury-time winner. It’s a third win in four for the visitors, while Leganes still have a five-point cushion… thanks to Los Blancos.
Granada 0-3 Celta Vigo
There was no ‘new manager bounce’ for Granada as Tony Adams watched his side dismantled by Celta Vigo. Jozabed gave the visitors a half-time lead before Marcelo Diaz and Claudio Beauvue left Granada deep in the relegation mire.
Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 Malaga
Deportivo are surely safe now, nine points above the drop, after Malaga failed to follow up a win over Barcelona with another here. After a goalless first half, Joselu headed Depor in front and Pedro Mosquera made the points safe on 67 minutes.
