Cristiano Ronaldo scored a dramatic 97th minute penalty at the Bernabeu to grab a lucky win for Real Madrid after Juventus had stormed 0-3 ahead.
What is it with these Spanish giants? The whole sports betting world looked on as both Barcelona and, tonight, Real Madrid took three goal leads into their Champions League second legs, and both unbelievably surrendered them; the difference being Los Blancos got away with it. Don’t look back at the betting odds on this weeks results…it would make your eyes water!
Real Madrid 1-3 (4-3 on agg.) Juventus
The Bianconeri was destroyed by Ronaldo in the first leg but what a response Max Allegri got at the Bernabeu. His men made a lightning start and reduced the deficit after only two minutes, Mario Mandzukic heading past Keylor Navas. And the big Croatian planted another fierce header past the Real keeper on 37 to send shockwaves around the stadium.
Then on the hour, Navas had a nightmare, dropping a cross onto the knee of Blaise Matuidi and watched it bounce agonisingly into the net.
Juventus continued to boss the game as the home crowd fell silent but it looked like extra time was looming until the astonishing late turn of events. On 95 minutes Medhi Benatia was adjudged to have pushed Lucas Vazquez as referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot. Then in the midst of furious Italian protests, Oliver sent Gianluigi Buffon off, to make Ronaldo’s penalty conversion that bit easier.
Amazing stuff!
Bayern Munich 0-0 (2-1 on agg.) Sevilla
No such drama at the Allianz Arena as Bayern saw off a determined assault from Sevilla, but the visitors can feel a little unlucky not to have gone through. They played well throughout and came desperately close when Joaquin Correa smashed the crossbar with a header midway through the second half.
As frustration mounted Correa saw red for a rash challenge in injury time and that was that.
The two hot favourites stumbled through to the semi-finals.
