The top dogs of Bundesliga are back with a bang!
Bayern, Leipzig and Hoffenheim all impressed betting websites as they start the year with dominating victories in their respective football games. The fourth-placed Dortmund made a huge statement as well, showing fans that they shouldn’t be counted out.
Sure enough, with a couple of new signings also making a dream debut, the return of the German top flight can’t get any better than this.
SC Freiburg 1-2 Bayern Munich
A Robert Lewandowski brace highlighted the opening game of Bundesliga after a month-long break. Freiburg made life hard for the leaders as they went ahead early with a fourth-minute goal from Janik Haberer, but Lewy proved that he is world class with a pair of clinical strikes, including the game-winner in stoppage time.
With Lewandowski – who became the second most prolific scorer in the league’s history with 135 goals – on their side, Bayern should be able to handle Bremen and beat an Asian Handicap -2.00 @ 1.85 when they meet next week.
Wolfsburg 1-0 Hamburger SV
New signing Paul-Georges Ntep was influential in the Wolves’ win, poking a hole in Hamburg’s defence to set up Mario Gomez for a close-range finish with eight minutes to go. The game appeared to be heading to a draw with Hamburg holding down the home team despite the 33rd-minute dismissal of Albin Ekdal, but Ntep was too lively for the visitors in his maiden Bundesliga outing.
Schalke 04 1-0 Ingolstadt
Another debutant in the German top flight, Guido Burgstaller scored a last-gasp winner to help Schalke edge Ingolstadt in front of the Veltins-Arena crowd. The former FC Nurnberg striker came in as a substitute after the break and slotted in an Alessandro Schopf’s cross two minutes into injury time, giving the injury-riddled Royal Blues their first win since Matchday 12.
Werder Bremen 1-2 Borussia Dortmund
The absence of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang didn’t bother Dortmund as they finished Bremen at Weser Stadium. Bremen—who were down to 10 men after Jaroslav Drobny was ejected late in the first half—still provided a difficult test when Fin Bartels cancelled out Andre Schurrle’s opener. Nevertheless, the numerical advantage proved to be too much to overcome for the hosts as BVB substitutes Ousmane Dembele and Raphael Guerreiro stepped up to set Lukasz Piszczek’s winner 20 minutes before time.
Darmstadt 98 0-0 Borussia Monchengladbach
Both teams and their new managers Torsten Frings and Dieter Hecking have to settle for a goalless draw after the players failed to convert any of their clear-cut chances in 90 minutes of play. Though, Frings and Darmstadt will be happy that they snapped the team’s eight-game losing streak to start 2017.
Augsburg 0-2 Hoffenheim
It was another impressive display for Hoffenheim as they remain the only unbeaten team in Europe’s major leagues this season. Hoffenheim took the lead just minutes after the restart when Sandro Wagner converted a beautiful assist from Nadiem Amiri, and they made it two 17 minutes later with Mark Uth setting up Andrej Kramaric.
If Hoffenheim can continue their brilliant run, they are likely to pose a huge challenge when they visit Leipzig where they are considered underdogs with odds of 1X2 @ 4.00.
RB Leipzig 3-0 Eintracht Frankfurt
The Bulls didn’t forget their 3-0 humbling in Week 16 as they bounced back big with a convincing win over Frankfurt. Marvin Compper’s goal from close range and Timo Werner’s stoppage-time header gave Leipzig the lead in the first half, and an own-goal from Jesus Vallejo in 67 minutes put the nail in the visitor’s coffin.
It also helped Leipzig that Frankfurt were down to 10 men after keeper Lukas Hradecky was sent off with the game just three minutes old.
Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 Hertha BSC
Bayer are now up to eight after taking down the Capital club through goals from Turkey internationals Omer Toprak and Hakan Calhanoglu. Bayer went 2-0 ahead within 36 minutes before Valentin Stocker cut the deficit at the stroke of half-time. However, Calhanoglu sealed the game with a brilliant volley a minute before the death of time.
Mainz 05 0-0 Koln
Playing without the suspended Jhon Cordoba and the departed Yunus Malli, who signed with Wolfsburg, Mainz clearly lacked the firepower to score. Nevertheless, the same goes for the Billy Goats with their star striker Anthony Modeste failing to find a way through the O-Fives’ defensive ranks.
