You better believe it because whatever the betting odds, there’s plenty of action in La Liga football games.
And G stands for goals!
Certainly, the weekend began and ended with clinical victories for teams beginning with G.
Girona 3-0 Leganes
A comprehensive victory which moved Girona, who continue to defy sports betting pundits, up into eighth spot.
Christian Stuani and Portu put the La Liga new boys in the ascendancy before Juanpe made the game safe five minutes from time.
Leganes, who have not won away from home since October, were pretty lifeless and failed to muster a reply, although they remain comfortably midtable.
Las Palmas 1-2 Sevilla
A controversial end to a compelling game.
That Alejandro Galvez’s last-gasp equaliser was ruled out was harsh to say the least as improving Las Palmas, who now look like losing their star man Jonathan Viera to China, stay in the bottom three.
Yet while Sevilla were fortunate to escape that, there’s no doubt they deserved this victory, courtesy of goals from Wissam Ben Yedder and Pablo Sarabia with Jonathan Calleri’s late penalty proving to be only a consolation for the Canary Islanders.
Eibar 0-2 Barcelona
Going 31 matches without defeat is no mean feat and one of the factors why Barcelona will regain the Spanish title by the end of the current campaign.
This run stretches back to the end of last season but new coach Ernesto Valverde deserves much of the credit.
Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba scored the goals as Barca nudged past tough opponents who had Fabian Orellana dismissed midway through the second half —his third career dismissal against the Catalans.
Alaves 1-0 Deportivo La Coruna
They are flying!
Alaves have now won four and drawn one of their last six matches to turn around their season.
They are now 10 points clear of the drop zone—a position which would have been unthought of at the turn of the year—thanks to Munir El Haddadi’s goal just past the hour mark.
It’s two, albeit narrow defeats, for Deportivo and their new manager Clarence Seedorf.
Malaga 1-2 Valencia
If ever a game summed up the fortunes of a lowly club, it was this one.
With little over 10 minutes left, Malaga led high-flying Valencia and were on course for only their fourth league triumph of the season, thanks to Brown Ideye’s 27th-minute goal.
Then Francis Coquelin headed an equaliser for the dominant visitors (he failed to score in 160 games for Arsenal before his move last month) and within five minutes, Ignasi Miquel conceded a penalty—which resulted in a second yellow card—and Dani Parejo tucked home the resulting spot-kick.
Valencia were back up to third, rock bottom Malaga were devastated.
Real Sociedad 3-0 Levante
An ultimately comprehensive afternoon for Sociedad and a worrying one for Levante who were easily brushed aside.
They remain just outside the bottom three.
Sergio Canales was the star with the decisive third, a composed finish after he had set up the second goal for Juanmi.
Xabi Prieto, who later went off injured, grabbed a 10th-minute opener for the hosts from a dubiously awarded penalty kick.
Atletico Madrid 2-0 Athletic Bilbao
For a while, it looked as if it could be a frustrating afternoon for second-placed Atletico.
They knew they had to win to keep alive their faint title hopes and were struggling to find a way past Bilbao.
Yet, manager Diego Simeone introduced Kevin Gameiro and within eight minutes he had been rewarded.
Gameiro then turned provider for Diego Costa to score his fourth goal since re-joining Atletico to make the game safe.
RCD Espanyol 1-1 Villarreal
A point apiece which both teams will probably be content with.
Rodri’s 25th-minute opener had put the Yellow Submarine in sight of victory, but Esteban Granero’s free-kick rescued a late draw to pull Quique Sanchez Flores’ side further away from the drop zone.
Villarreal have some wriggle room in the European spots but could be thinking how closer they could have been to a top-four berth had they taken more than one point from six from this and other strugglers Alaves.
Real Betis 3-5 Real Madrid
Pre-match I predicted this had all the hallmarks of an entertaining clash.
But I certainly wasn’t expecting an eight-goal thriller!
Credit to Betis who weren’t beaten until substitute Karim Benzema’s 92nd -minute clincher.
However, the champions—behind at half-time for the first time this season—were on fire in an attacking sense, in a match which marked their 6,000th La Liga goal and Cristiano Ronaldo’s 10th goal in his last six matches.
Getafe 3-0 Celta Vigo
A fine week for Getafe as they followed up their draw in the Nou Camp with a comprehensive win to move into the top-half of the table.
Indeed, this victory lifted them above their opponents.
Angel Rodriguez’s double and a Jorge Molina strike sealed the points.
