We’ll know more by Saturday afternoon! Surely, Arsenal’s visit to Stamford Bridge is one of, if not the last chance for someone to stop Antonio Conte’s march to glory.
At the beginning of the season, few made a football prediction that Chelsea would romp to the Premier League title, particularly before they moved to Conte’s favoured three at the back.
WEEK 24 SATURDAY:
Chelsea vs Arsenal
These are the football games which can define a season. Chelsea are nine points clear at the top and will move 12 ahead of Arsenal if they win. Arsene Wenger needs a reaction from his players after a shock defeat to Watford and will remind them they have already beaten the Blues 3-0 this term.
Hull City vs Liverpool
What a start to his career as Tigers’ boss Marco Silva has had. Chelsea, Manchester United, selling his best player Robert Snodgrass, getting stuffed in the cup by Championship club Fulham, and now Liverpool! Jurgen Klopp will be glad to see the back of January and get his challenge back on track.
Everton vs Bournemouth
The Toffees seem to have been seventh for the whole season, and I wouldn’t bet against them finishing up there. Eddie Howe’s Cherries need to arrest a worrying decline though. They still have a seven-point gap to the drop zone but have only won one in six.
West Brom vs Stoke City
If ever there was a tight mid-table tussle then surely this is it. After a tricky start to the season, Mark Hughes has Stoke performing consistently, while the Baggies are as redoubtable as ever. Both teams have participated in more games under 2.5 goals than over, and the return fixture was 1-1. Can you see what’s coming?
Watford vs Burnley
When will Burnley start to pick up points away from home? 28 of their 29 have come at fortress Turf Moor, but you’d think that a trip to Watford may present the perfect opportunity. That was before the Hornets took Arsenal to task on Wednesday!
Southampton vs West Ham
Without Dimitri Payet the Hammers look more at one with themselves again and Slaven Bilic is calmly steering his team to safety. Robert Snodgrass is a good addition and the Scot could cause the Saints problems after they succumbed to lowly Swansea in midweek.
Crystal Palace vs Sunderland
These are the games Big Sam Allardyce revels in. A proper relegation scrap, a six-pointer, and after picking up his first win at Palace on Wednesday he’ll be pushing his team on for a second. Now’s the time for the Black Cats to show some fight; if they lose in London, I fear they could soon be doomed.
WEEK 24 SUNDAY:
Tottenham Hotspur vs Middlesbrough
Spurs missed a chance to close the gap at Sunderland, but they have another golden opportunity at home to the league’s lowest scorers. Boro boss and Jose Mourinho’s special friend, Aitor Karanka, has blamed the fans and the board for his team’s failings. Hmm…
Manchester City vs Swansea City
Has Pep Guardiola really given up on the title? Anything less than a resounding win against the relegation-threatened Swans may give that claim some credence. Swansea boss Paul Clement certainly hasn’t given up on survival with back-to-back wins and holds the coveted 17th place.
