Premier League: Fulham Aim to Spoil Liverpool’s Repeat Bid

Fulham vs Liverpool

Fulham will face a gargantuan task as they host Premier League defending champions Liverpool over at Craven Cottage this upcoming Sunday night.

The Cottagers are currently on a slump as they have lost three of their last four, and they are hopeful that playing at home would provide them some relief as they try to upset the visitors.

Their return to English top-flight has been anything but a smooth ride as they have only gathered seven points after the first 11 matchdays of the 2020/21 season.

Fulham are currently 17th in the league standings, and they are hanging on by a thread as they try to avoid being in the dreaded relegation zone.

Things are about to get harder for them as their visitors are looking invincible given that Liverpool have been undefeated in the Premier League since their earlier loss to Aston Villa last October.

And with their spot at the Champions League Final 16 already secured, now they can fully focus on the domestic front to remind everyone of their championship pedigree.

The Premier League 2020 odds are stacked against the hosts this weekend, but can they surprise everyone with a rare victory at home?

Talking Points

Fulham desperate to stay afloat

Something needs to change for Scott Parker and co. if they want to maintain their top-flight status by season’s end.

With a putrid goal difference of -10, Fulham have one foot on the edge of the drop zone. So more than anything, they are hopeful to turn their encouraging performances into actual results in order to move up the table.

Top scorers Bobby Decordova-Reid and Ademola Lookman would need to be on target, but their backline cannot afford to have an off-night at any time.

Their December got off to a great start when they defeated Leicester City, 2-1, on the road. But after that, they lost 2-0 to Manchester City despite frustrating them in key stretches.

Now as they’ll face Liverpool, the only reprieve for them could be if the visitors will opt to rest some of their key players.

The Reds cannot afford to take their foot off the gas pedal if they want to secure the top spot of the table.

As of this writing, Liverpool are level with Tottenham with 24 points, while the likes of Chelsea, Leicester City, and Southampton are all within striking distance.

Although they have been nicked with injuries for much of the season, Jurgen Klopp should get his props for rallying his boys in their ongoing title defence.

Not only did Klopp manage to produce favourable Premier League 2020 results for his squad, he has also done a great job of instilling confidence to his players.

But at the end of the day, Liverpool’s fate will rest on the shoulders of their leaders in Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Jordan Henderson.

Salah in particular will be a key man to watch out for if you’re Fulham as he is on a mission to exploit Fulham’s backline this weekend.

The Egyptian star has already scored 82 goals in 118 appearances, which is the most of any player since the start of the 2017/18 season.

He recently broke Steven Gerrard’s record for the most goals scored in the Champions League with 22, and he has scored in three of their last four Premier League fixtures.

History

Liverpool hold the significant edge in terms of the overall head-to-heads.

In their last 29 games together, the Reds have won 19 times, while the Cottagers won in only six along with four draws.

Jurgen Klopp’s side has won their last six Premier League meetings against Fulham with an aggregate tally of 18-4. Fulham have yet to win against Liverpool in more than eight years.

Betting Tip

??
Fulham vs Liverpool Liverpool Asian Handicap -1.25 @ 1.70
December 13, 00:30 (GMT+8)

While Fulham have belief that they can upset the Reds, unfortunately the numbers show little faith for them to pull this off.

Here at SBOTOP, the hosts are only priced at 8.50 to win, whereas Liverpool are pegged at 1.33 and a draw is at 5.00 in the 1×2 market.

The Reds are also expected to unload on the poor Cottagers as far as goal count is concerned, so going for Over 2.50 @ 2.16 or Total Goal 2-3 @ 1.89 in their favour are safe alternatives as well.

With Liverpool coming in much healthier compared to last month, perhaps it is just a matter of time for them to reclaim their rightful place at the top of the standings.

The Reds should cruise along and take care of business come Sunday, and it will serve as a momentum builder since they’ll face a strong club in Tottenham next.
