Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United
There are very few, if any, of the remaining matches in the 2019/20 Premier League season with little riding on them.
Everton, in 12th position, have a realistic ambition to win a place in next season’s European competitions while still needing a point or two to allay any lingering relegation fears, so all 20 teams have something to play for.
Liverpool need two wins to take the league title back to Anfield, while bottom placed Norwich City need to recover from yesterday’s defeat at home to Southampton and fight for their lives over the next eight games.
This match between Tottenham and West Ham United has it all. It is one of those famous old games in the English top flight which evokes memories of glory days gone by.
The great Jimmy Greaves played for both during their best periods, as Spurs dominated the league and West Ham provided the backbone of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team.
These days, their ambitions are a little more modest. Jose Mourinho’s Spurs sit in eighth place and have work to do to qualify for Europe, while David Moyes has the task of guiding West Ham to safety, though SBOBET fans will remember the wily Scot has done it before.
Under Moyes’ guidance, the Hammers finished strongly to survive in the 2017/18 season and now they will need to repeat that feat as they sit outside the bottom three on goal difference only.
Talking Points
Spurs returning players may need time
The long layoff gave some of Spurs’ key players the chance to recover from injury, but they struggled to make an impact in their first run out against Manchester United on Friday.
Despite dropping two points late in the game as Bruno Fernandes converted United’s 16th penalty of the season, a draw wasn’t a bad result in Spurs’ opening game of the restart.
The Whites were boosted by the return to fitness of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son but both toiled without much end result.
They are both sure to appear in the Tottenham vs West Ham United highlights and I wouldn’t bet against either scoring, but they may need a little more time to get back to full match sharpness.
Spurs had other players to shine in their opener. Erik Lamela was industrious and effective against the Red Devils and Steven Bergwijn’s pace troubled their opponents as he scored a spectacular opener.
Tottenham fans will hope for a tilt at a top four slot but a place in next year’s Europa League looks more likely, and this is the type of game they must win.
Can Jack Wilshere save the Hammers?
West Ham’s nine match campaign will get underway with the boost that the long term injured Jack Wilshere is back in full training.
Since joining in 2018 on a three year contract, the former Arsenal midfielder has made just 14 appearances for the Hammers and just two this season.
Wilshere has been working on an individual fitness programme for most of his time at the London Stadium, but he’s now fully fit and ready for action.
Moyes will hope for more from last summers’ expensive recruits.
Sebastien Haller has seven goals and Pablo Fornals has five assists but that is a poor return for the thick end of £64-M. And since Moyes returned to the club, he has put his faith in fellow Scot Robert Snodgrass who has weighed in with five goals
The Hammers are in a real relegation battle and their run-in puts them in serious danger, but a fit Jack Wilshere would surely give them a better chance.
History
The 52 meetings between these two London stalwarts of the Premier League era have always been well contested, with Spurs coming out on top with 26 victories to West Ham’s 16 and there have been nine draws.
Spurs won the return match at the London Stadium back in November by a 2-3 margin, and with both Kane and Son on target.
But in the meeting here at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season, West Ham nicked a 0-1 win thanks to spectacular strike from Michail Antonio.
It will be some achievement to pull off another shock in Tuesday as the Hammers have lost the last five away matches and have only won one of the last nine Premier League matches before they play Wolves on Saturday.
Betting Tip
Tottenham Hotspur vs West Ham United | Over 2.75 goals @ 1.87 | |
June 24, 03:15 (GMT+8) |
The latest Tottenham vs West Ham United betting odds reckon the hosts will heap more pressure on the Hammers. Spurs are at 1.72 to win with the draw at 3.59 and West Ham are at 4.26 to grab a vital three points.
I think Spurs will win and I’m backing Kane and Son to begin finding their feet and perhaps the net, while West Ham will go for goals to help their own desperate cause.
