Premier League football returns to Turf Moor on Saturday as Burnley opens up with a home match against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton.

Having finished seventh in the 2017/18 season, Sean Dyche found his side stranded in the bottom three at Christmas last term and staring a survival battle in the face. Burnley’s post Christmas revival owed much to the return from injury of now departed keeper Tom Heaton, but equally to the emergence of an exciting young talent in Dwight McNeil. While saying goodbye to Heaton, the Clarets have welcomed another hero home as Jay Rodriguez returns to Turf Moor. Saints find a cutting edge
Ralph Hasenhuttl steadied the ship at St Mary’s last season, though it looked hairy until the final two games. The new coach blooded some young players but Saints stalwart James Ward Prowse was exceptional, scoring crucial goals in the run in.
Having struggled for goals for some time, the Saints have strengthened their attack in the summer transfer window. Former Burnley man Danny Ings has made his move permanent, and he has been joined by Che Adams, a raw, fast and dangerous recruit from Birmingham City. With Nathan Redmond rediscovering his form under Hasenhuttl, the Saints now have a cutting edge which could hurt most defences, and it will get a good test against Burnley’s resolute rearguard.
History
The Clarets have looked handy in pre-season, hammering Ligue 1 side Nice 6-1 and beating Parma 2-0, while the Saints too have had a happy pre-season, winning four and drawing one of their summer friendlies.
They have scored early in each of these games and will hope to surprise the Clarets on Saturday.
Burnley and Southampton started the 2018/19 Premier League campaign with a meeting at St Marys Stadium which ended in a goalless draw. The return match at Turf Moor finished up at 1-1 as Ashley Barnes scored a last gasp penalty to save a point for the Clarets.
After a poor start for Burnley with Europa League fixture congestion, and a difficult campaign for the Saints culminating in a relegation fight, these two teams finished a single place apart, in 15th and 16th.
The head to heads are pretty even with the Saints edging it at six wins to five, with eight draws in the 19 meetings since 2005. The last three have been draws, with the Clarets winning the previous two by the odd goal.
Burnley has not lost at home to the Saints in six games and both come into the match unbeaten in five.

The Clarets are marginal favourites to win this opener at odds of 2.67, with Southampton at 2.77 and the draw at 2.99, and I think that home advantage could just give Dyche’s team the edge.
They seem to thrive at home to the Saints and that’s something Hasenhuttl will hope to rectify on Saturday.
1-1 is the most likely outcome at odds of 5.40, and I suspect the Saints boss would take that now.
