It can’t get any better than beating Manchester City in their own back yard, and now Antonio Conte’s Spurs return to the North West on Wednesday when they face Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

There’s a world of difference between the Sky Blues and the Clarets but there is no way Conte will underestimate these opponents. When his Chelsea were League Champions in 2017, Burnley went to Stamford Bridge on the opening day of the following season and left with a 3-2 victory.

The Italian master knows he’s in for another battle.

Dyche’s men earned their first away win of the campaign with a thumping 3-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion while Tottenham picked up the result of the weekend when they beat the champions at the Etihad. And now both teams need a result on Wednesday, Spurs to strengthen their top four challenge and Burnley to continue their quest for top flight survival.

Is the ‘old’ Burnley ready to rumble?

In their sixth consecutive season in the Premier League Burnley seemed to have lost something. They struggled to hold on to leads early in the season, making defensive errors and a long run of draws and defeats left them in the bottom three.

But the signs are there that the Clarets are ready for the fight again. They have conceded just two goals in the last five games, are in touch with the group of teams outside the bottom three and have games in hand. While becoming devilishly hard to beat again Burnley have also rediscovered their attacking bite, and one man sure to feature in the Burnley vs Spurs highlights is the Clarets’ new signing Wout Weghorst. The 6ft 6in Dutchman has helped to breathe life into Burnley’s survival campaign since his £12m transfer from Bundesliga giants Wolfsburg. He has made two assists and scored one goal in four games. Not a bad return when two of the opponents were Liverpool and Manchester United.

Head coach Sean Dyche said Burnley’s 3-0 win over Brighton had been coming and he expects more of the same over the remaining 16 games his team has to play. Top scorer Maxwell Cornet is back to full fitness while young midfielders Josh Brownhill and Dwight McNeill have been impressive over the past few weeks. And experienced winger Aaron Lennon has been in superb form, scoring a cracker against Brighton, and he’s set to line up against the club he served for almost ten years, scoring 26 goals in 266 appearances for Spurs until he transferred to Everton in 2015.  

Kane is back!

While Heung-Min Son is top scoring for Spurs with nine goals, it was the performance of Harry Kane which wrote all the headlines following his man-of-the-match performance against Manchester City. His double, both typical poachers’ goals, took him to seven for the campaign and he looked back to his best. Spurs have sadly missed Kane’s true form this season and their fans will desperately hope this performance signalled his return.

January recruit Dejan Kulusevski was a constant threat against the Sky Blues, scoring the opener and crossing for Kane’s last gasp winner. But while Spurs are looking good in attack, their back line is less so, conceding ten goals in the last five games and skipper Hugo Lloris has made a couple of big errors in recent weeks.

Tottenham’s defensive three of Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Emerson can expect a lively evening against Weghorst and Cornet and the tussles at either end of the pitch will be fascinating.

History

Spurs have won 13 of the previous 21 meetings between these two sides while Burnley have won four and there have been four draws. The Londoners have won four of the last six encounters, including a league double last season and a 1-0 victory in the fourth round of this year’s Carabao Cup. 

In terms of recent form the Clarets have won one, drawn three and lost one of the last five, while Spurs have won two and lost three over that period.
