Premier League: Can Crystal Palace Claim First 2023 Win Against City?

Crystal Palace vs Manchester City

When will Crystal Palace win a game in 2023? The Eagles remain winless in all competitions during this calendar year and could very well be dragged into a Premier League relegation scrap if they don’t show any improvement.

And the Premier League 2023 betting odds will be heavily against them as they host reigning champions Manchester City at Selhurst Park.

Palace have been a thorn in City’s side in recent years, but the champions are in the midst of another unbeaten run as they continue their chase of leaders Arsenal.

Talking Points

Crystal Palace remain winless in 2023

Crystal Palace cannot get a win these days. Patrick Vieira’s Eagles are currently on a nine-game winless run in the Premier League in 2023 as they continue to languish in mid-table mediocrity.

Palace suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Aston Villa last time out after a Joachim Andersen own goal. It was another listless display by the Eagles, who did not have a single shot on target. They also played the last half-hour down to 10 men due to midfielder Cheick Doucoure’s sending off.

Doucoure will now be suspended for the visit of City, which will be a huge blow for Crystal Palace. Jeffrey Schlupp and Will Hughes are likely the main candidates to play alongside Albert Sambi Lokonga in midfield, while James McArthur – who just made his season debut after returning from injury – and Luka Milevojevic are options off the bench.

Crystal Palace finally got top scorer Wilfried Zaha (6 goals) back from his injury layoff, but scoring goals remains a major issue for the Eagles, who have a mere 21 goals in 25 Premier League games this season.

Vieira started Zaha through the middle given the ongoing struggles of centre-forwards Jean-Philippe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard, and he is likely to stick with that formation against City, where they will play primarily on the counter-attack.

Man City making another unbeaten march

Manchester City are in the middle of one of their trademark unbeaten runs once again. The defending champions have now gone five games unbeaten in the Premier League after a routine 2-0 home win against Newcastle United.

Goals from Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva saw the Citizens keep pace with Arsenal in the title race as they remain five points adrift of the leaders.

Foden has been in fantastic form of late with four goals and an assist in his last three appearances. But he might miss out against Palace after suffering a flare-up of his lingering foot injury.

The likes of Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, and Julian Alvarez are all candidates to return to the starting lineup, though, and are more than capable of providing some Premier League 2023 highlights in Foden’s absence.

Meanwhile, there is good news for City at the back as both Aymeric Laporte and John Stones are returning to full fitness. After reverting to a standard 4-2-3-1 formation against Newcastle, it remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola will return to the back-three system that he has been using with more frequency this season.

History

Manchester City hold a 15-4 win advantage over Crystal Palace in the Premier League era, with six draws.

However, the Eagles have been a bit of a bogey team to City in recent years. They have claimed two wins and three draws against the Citizens in their last 10 meetings.

Although, City reclaimed control with a dominant 4-2 victory in their first meeting of this season. After Palace took a shock 2-0 lead at the Etihad, Erling Haaland exploded with a second-half hat-trick to lead City to victory.

Betting Tip

SBOTOP odds have Manchester City installed as massive 1.32 favourites to pick up an away win at Palace, who are priced at 7.00 to win at Selhurst Park. A draw is 5.00.

Given Crystal Palace’s recent struggles, this should be a relatively straightforward win for City as they continue to chase another championship. Even without Foden, City have too many attacking weapons to throw at Palace, who can’t seem to score any goals.
