Premier League: Can Manchester United Finish in the Upper Echelon?

The Red Devils have 14 Premier League ties left in the season, and Red Devils fans are left pondering if their beloved outfit can still end the campaign as one of the top teams in the English League.

Manchester United have been a staple powerhouse in the English top flight, and for many reasons, it seemed that they already own real estate in the upper echelon of the league standings.

Year after year, the Red Devils feature as one of the clubs to represent the Premier League in the UFEA Champions League or the Europa League, as they perpetually garner winning seasons in the top flight. But this season, things might be a little different at Old Trafford.

The top flight is down to its last handful of games, and Manchester United still can’t seem to crack the league’s top five. With a pedestrian 15-3-11 record, Ten Hag’s outfit has only garnered 48 points thus far, trailing fifth-placed Tottenham by 11 points.

So, can the Red Devils still end the season as one of the top four, or maybe even the top five teams in the Premier League?

They’ll need to take advantage and make sure that they get all three points against relegation candidates like Sheffield and Burnley, whom they will face this month.

But in terms of “easy” matchups, that’s as far as it goes for the Red Devils for the rest of the season.

Chelsea

United hope to start their tail-end run at Stamford Bridge against the spirited Blues. Chelsea have been unbeaten in their last five Premier League bouts, and they’re keen on continuing their run when they host the Red Devils.

Luckily for Ten Hag, history will be on their side, as they’ve bossed their recent head-to-heads against Chelsea, which included a 4-1 thrashing back in May of last year, which was followed by a thrilling 2-1 win a week before Christmas.

Liverpool

Unfortunately for Manchester United, they would have to face league leaders Liverpool not once but twice before ending their campaign.

Liverpool aren’t an easy matchup for any club in the Premier League for obvious reasons, and to have to face them twice while trying to climb a few spots in the standings just poses a herculean task, especially for an underperforming club like United.

It’s not impossible, though, especially after their FA Cup matchup last month that exposed Liverpool to a humbling 4-3 defeat at the hands of United’s youngsters.

The Red Devils have won just one out of their last five top-flight bouts with Liverpool, but their recent FA Cup thumping against Klopp’s side might just be the pivotal win to turn United’s head-to-head slump against Liverpool around.

Arsenal

When it rains, it pours, am I right? If SBOTOP football fans think that facing Liverpool twice might hurt Manchester United’s chances of reaching the upper echelon of the league, imagine also having to face the second-seeded Arsenal twice to boot.

The Gunners are poised for a top-three finish two seasons in a row, and with just two points separating them from the league leaders, Arteta and his men are definitely one of the SBOTOP Premier League 2024 betting odds favourites to win the English title this season.

As for their past head-to-heads, it’s been a close matchup between these historic clubs. Despite Arsenal winning their last two Premier League bouts, the Red Devils have managed to win two of their last five.

Including United’s impending bouts against Liverpool, Ten Hag’s outfit will have to face the most formidable adversaries the Premier League has to offer four times. That doesn’t really go in their favour, does it?

Mid-table teams

Aside from Liverpool and Arsenal, the Red Devils will also have a crack at multiple mid-table teams as well. The scorching Bournemouth, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, and Brighton are all on United’s upcoming slate.

All outfits mentioned are placed below the Red Devils in the league table, and fans expect winning Premier League 2024 results from United when going up against said clubs. But with the way the Premier League has been all season long, upsets are not out of the question, not even the slightest.

The Magpies are the closest to Manchester United in terms of seeding, trailing just four points behind. Brighton have been stagnant since their Europa League exit, splitting their last five top-flight contests 2-1-2. Elsewhere, Crystal Palace have just one win in their last five matches as they try to fend off the possibility of regulation by the end of the season. Bournemouth, on the other hand, have been one of the hottest teams in the top flight, winning four of their last five and climbing a few spots in the table to boot.
