The new Premier League season is just a couple of weeks old, but Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United are already in turmoil. The Red Devils are reeling after another demoralising defeat and are scrambling to give their new coach some much-needed reinforcements.
Elsewhere, big spenders Chelsea are still busy chasing more big-money signings while Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest have added yet more new players to their completely rebuilt squad.
Read on below as SBOTOP serves up the hottest Premier League 2022 news and transfer rumours.
Ten Hag fumes over Man United’s poor performances, transfer business
Erik Ten Hag’s tenure at Manchester United is off to a tough start. After a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Brentford, Ten Hag has lost his first two Premier League games in charge and his Red Devils currently sit at the very bottom of the table.
Amid such a disastrous start, Ten Hag has cancelled his team’s day off and added some extra training sessions after his team was outrun by Brentford.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag is reportedly furious at the club’s failure to land his preferred transfer targets this summer, most notably midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
Man United are currently scrambling to secure a few more signings for Ten Hag. Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford, and the Red Devils are reportedly set to hold new talks with the Italian club over the next day or two.
And after aborting the much-maligned move for Marko Arnautovic, there have been rumblings that United have contacted Mauro Icardi’s representatives over a potential move. The 29-year-old Argentine striker is surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain, where he has struggled to get consistent playing time with Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Chelsea chasing a couple more big signings
Chelsea have been the biggest spenders in the Premier League thus far with around €186.59m worth of transfers. But the Blues could potentially blow well past the €200m mark as they continue to chase more players.
The Blues remain strongly linked with Barcelona’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as they look for a replacement for the departed Timo Werner.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are still not giving up their chase for Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana. The Foxes have already rejected a couple of bids from the Blues as they hold out for £80m for their star centre-back.
Chelsea have also had a shock £40m bid for Everton youngster Anthony Gordon rejected and are considering making another proposal.
The Blues could very unload a couple of youngsters to fund their transfer business. Midfielder Conor Gallagher has been linked with a £40m move to Newcastle while winger Callum Hudson-Odoi could join Borussia Dortmund on loan.
Nottingham Forest’s massive spending spree continues
Nottingham Forest are enjoying their first Premier League season in 23 years, and they are pulling out all the stops to stay in the English top flight.
The Trees have already made several signings this summer – most notably striker Taiwo Awoniyi and former Manchester United man Jesse Lingard – and they have added a trio of new players in veteran midfielders Remo Freuler and Cheikhou Kouyate and forward Emmanuel Dennis and to further strengthen their squad.
And Forest aren’t quite finished yet. Aside from closing in on a deal to sign Brighton striker Neal Maupay for a reported £15m, they have reportedly submitted a bid for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar.
Maupay’s deal would push the Trees’ total transfer expenditure to well over €130m, which is a massive gamble on their part.
Although, Forest did pick up their first win of the season this weekend as they edged out West Ham 1-0 at the City Ground. And while the additions of Freuler and Kouyate in midfield and Dennis and Maupay up front are unlikely to significantly impact the Trees’ Premier League 2022 odds of staying up, they should at least have a fighting chance of survival.
Spurs loan out disappointing midfield duo again
Tottenham Hotspur have once again loaned out the midfield duo of Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele. Lo Celso will return to Villarreal, where he spent the second half of last season, while Ndombele looks set to join Napoli after spending part of last season at Lyon.
The two midfielders both came over to Spurs in the summer of 2019 in big-money moves. Lo Celso cost £29m from Real Betis, while Spurs broke their transfer record to sign Ndombele in a £54m deal.
However, neither one was able to settle in the Premier League and don’t appear to be in the plans of head coach Antonio Conte.
