Premier League: Will Everton Experience the New Manager Bounce?

Everton fans will see a familiar face in the dugout on Wednesday, as David Moyes returns as their head coach in their upcoming Premier League game against Aston Villa at Goodison Park. The Scottish gaffer was re-appointed as the Toffees coach after the team recently sacked Sean Dyche following a lacklustre run of Premier League 2025 results.

The Toffees are near the drop zone because they’re the 16^th seed, with only 17 points after the opening 19 matchdays of the 2024-25 campaign. Everton are on a five-game winless run in the English top-flight after dropping their game against Bournemouth, although they’re coming off a 2-0 win over Peterborough in the third round of the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are eighth in the table with 32 points. Unai Emery’s men are undefeated in three of their last four Premier League matches, and they’re fresh from a 2-1 victory against West Ham United in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

Everton had plenty of days to prepare against Aston Villa, and newly minted manager David Moyes will have his pick of the litter come Wednesday. Dwight McNeil, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Seamus Coleman took the day off against Peterborough, and they will likely return to the starting lineup against the Villans. McNeil and Calvert-Lewin are two of the Toffees’ top scorers this season, combining for five league goals and five assists. Coleman, on the other hand, is one of Everton’s most influential players on their backline.

James Garner could also return to the pitch after missing the past few months due to a back injury. Tim Iroegbunam and Armando Broja are the only notable absentees for Moyes, with Iroegbunam still rehabbing and Broja sustaining a knee injury against Peterborough.

David Moyes faces the daunting task of making Everton exciting to watch again, as fans laboured watching Sean Dyche’s ultra-pragmatic tactics. The Toffees have the second-worst attack in the Premier League with 15 goals while conceding 25 on the other end for a goal difference of -10.

 

Aston Villa get the super sub back

Aston Villa will be boosted by Jhon Duran’s return from suspension, and the Colombian striker will likely resume his off-the-bench role against Everton on Wednesday. Duran is the Villans’ second-leading scorer behind Ollie Watkins (who has eight goals), with seven league goals. Aston Villa’s attack will get even better in the next few matches after they recruited Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund.

However, Unai Emery faces a lineup dilemma ahead of Wednesday, as Ross Barkley, Amadou Onana, Lucas Digne, Pau Torres, and Diego Carlos might miss the Everton game due to injuries, and Jaden Philogene was sold to Ipswich Town earlier this week. If none of them play against the Toffees, Emery will likely recall Matty Cash, Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara, Kosta Nedeljkovic, and Leon Bailey into the starting XI.
