AC Milan have put the whole Serie A on notice last season although they finished at second place behind city rivals Inter Milan.
And as they watched them lift their first Scudetto in over a decade, the Rossoneri plan to do the same feat when the 2021/22 Serie A season kicks off this August.
It has been a while since AC Milan have won the Serie A championship. The last time that they did so was in the 2010/11 season to where current Juventus head coach Max Allegri managed the likes of Gennaro Gattuso, Alexandre Pato, Robinho, and a younger Zlatan ibrahimovic.
Like most European clubs, AC Milan have been busy during the transfer market since they’ve witnessed players come and go.
Hakan Calhanoglu and Gianluigi Donnarumma both left the club for Inter Milan and PSG respectively. However, much of their core remained intact and they’ve added a couple of quality pieces.
The Rossoneri appear to be a squad who are couple of key moves away to being legitimate championship contenders. And today at SBOTOP, we list the reasons why AC Milan can bring home the trophy in 2022.
AC Milan have reloaded out front
Experience will be one of AC Milan’s main advantage in the upcoming season especially if you look at their frontline.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the most recognisable name among the group, but he’ll be joined by the likes of Josip Ilicic and Olivier Giroud.
Josip Ilicic is reportedly joining AC Milan for a 4-M Euros transfer fee, while Olivier Giroud completed his permanent move to San Siro after a three-year stint with Chelsea in the Premier League.
While the trio aren’t as fast as they used to since they’re all past their primes, they make up for it with their physicality, experience, and guile which will come in handy against the rugged defenders in Italy.
Along with those three, AC Milan still have the likes of Franck Kessie, Jens Petter Hauge, Franck Kessie, Brahim Diaz, Ante Rebic, and Rafael Leao – who are all expected to generate numerous Serie A 2021 highlights.
Kessie was the second leading scorer with 14 goals and four assists, while Rebic had 11 goals and six assists. Diaz and Leao, meanwhile, are expected to play more prominent roles after Calhanoglu’s departure and they’ve combined for 14 goals and nine assists last season.
The Rossoneri were the fifth-best attacking side in Serie A last term and we expect them to not skip a beat this upcoming season.
They are playing without pressure
AC Milan will have all the motivation for next term since they aren’t really favoured by the Serie A 2021 odds to win the Scudetto.
Juventus became the hot favourites since Max Allegri returned at the helm, while Inter Milan and Atalanta have high betting odds too given their strong rosters.
Last season, the Rossoneri weren’t really aiming for a Scudetto since their main objective was just to return to the Champions League after missing out in the past few seasons. And they probably surprised themselves when they were exceeding their own expectations.
AC Milan kicked off the 2020/21 season with a 15-match unbeaten streak and they’ve also beaten some of the heavy favourites along the way.
Their 2-1 victory over Inter Milan last October was one of the highlights of their campaign as Zlatan Ibrahimovic went toe-to-toe against his former Manchester United teammate in Romelu Lukaku.
And although they started 2021 badly with a demoralising defeat against Juventus, the Rossoneri managed to win majority of their games while reaching the Coppa Italia quarter-finals as well as the Europa League Round of 16.
A huge credit goes to Stefano Pioli since he has successfully built a winning culture in San Siro, and that may very well be the reason to another successful run next term.
Never doubt Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Even as he’s approaching 40 this October,Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still a box office draw here in Serie A.
Since his return to San Siro, the big Swede has been an influential figure for the Rossoneri and he was their leading goalscorer with 15 goals.
Injuries and COVID-19 may have shortened his campaign in 2020/21, but he should be ready to lead his team to new heights once again since he is doing well in his pre-season rehab.
At this point of his career, Zlatan Ibrahimovic doesn’t have anything to prove which is why it’s remarkable that he keeps on fighting and going for AC Milan.
Ibrahimovic may have a season or two left given the long mileage of his legs, but he will do everything he can in order to win one again for the Rossoneri.
