Sampdoria vs Inter Milan
Bottom versus top. A one-way street right?
Probably in any other major European league yes, but that’s not always the case in Serie A, SBOBET fans.
Sampdoria may have only one win to their name so far in this early season, while opponents Inter Milan top the table after five wins out of five — most recently against Coppa Italia holders Lazio — and a maximum point haul.
But this is far from a given for the early leaders.
Talking Points
The big-spending Nerazzurri have produced a number of the initial Serie A highlights in 2019/20 and are making their mark under new boss Antonio Conte who was determined to be supported financially to bring in the men he earmarked as crucial to a title tilt.
To date, it has paid off.
Only one goal conceded thus far and 10 scored, including three for new club record singing Romelu Lukaku, whose goal last week in the Milan derby will have endeared himself to all those on the blue and black side of the city.
As many Manchester United fans will tell you, wherever the Belgian will go he will guarantee goals and — while his former employers are struggling to find the back of the net — Inter are reaping the benefits of his arrival.
Some writers say Inter are like a well-drilled Conte machine and while they should be genuine challengers given their summer spending and arrivals, it remains in the early days.
Indeed, after leading them to the top of Serie A after five wins from five, some are prematurely liking his managerial methods to Jose Mourinho – who remains the last coach to win the title with the Nerazzurri.
While Inter are seemingly flying high, Sampdoria have only scored three goals so far in their opening five matches and will be without Jeison Murillo who was sent-off in their midweek defeat to Fiorentina and therefore suspended for this one.
However, Sampdoria are no easy opponents.
Fans of Southampton will recall the goalscoring exploits of Manolo Gabbiadini a few years ago, while they retain a fans’ favourite in Fabio Quagliarella.
That Quagliarella was the Serie A top scorer last season for a side which finished ninth in the table was a terrific achievement and proof that the veteran marksman just gets better with age.
The striker and the Italy’s all-time oldest goalscorer also equalled Gabriel Batistuta’s record of scoring in 11 consecutive Serie A matches.
While he can’t be expected to repeat that feat, he remains to be a man to watch.
Coach Eusebio Di Francesco asked for their 1-0 victory over Torino last weekend to represent ‘a starting point’ following three consecutive defeats. Yet he then said they were ‘naive’ against Fiorentina as the Blucerchiati were beaten.
Quagliarella was only fit enough to come off the bench in that game and it could be a similar situation this weekend.
The hosts will be desperately be hoping he is back from the start.
History
Inter have won their last four meetings between the two clubs.
Last season, three goals in five minutes secured Inter a 2-1 win in the San Siro.
Danilo D’Ambrosio opened the scoring after 73 minutes. Gabbiadini levelled within three minutes only for Radja Nainggolan to fire in Inter’s winner two minutes later.
In this corresponding fixture 12 months ago, a last minute goal from Marcelo Brozovic won it for Inter.
It was a romp two seasons ago as Inter won 5-0 at the Stadio Luigi Ferrari, courtesy of four goals from Mauro Icardi and one from Ivan Perisic.
Icardi also netted twice as Inter won their home match 3-2.
Sampdoria’s last victory over the Nerazzurri came in the San Siro in April 2017 when a late Quagliarella penalty secured a 2-1 triumph.
They did the double over Inter that season too, winning 1-0 at home – Quagliarella again the match winner.
Overall in the league, Inter have won 67 times against Sampdoria who themselves have 20 victories with a further 37 draws.
