Serie A: It’s Lazio Chasing Juve Now!

Lazio is the new challenger to Juventus tonight after Simone Inzaghi’s team came from behind to beat Inter 2-1 in a pulsating clash at the Stadio Olimpico.

It means the Rome side is now in second place and just a single point behind I Bianconeri with 14 games left to play of the 2019/20 season. Juventus is back at the top of the Serie A table after a home win over Brescia but I Biancoceleste is now breathing down the Old Lady’s neck.

Lazio versus Inter was the match of the weekend and it certainly delivered. The pre-match betting odds had Lazio as marginal favourites to win the game but they went behind just before the break when Inter’s winter signing Ashley Young smashed home the opener.

But that man Ciro Immobile drew the hosts level, early in the second half, with his 26th goal of the season and Lazio’s 14th penalty after he’d taken a tumble under a challenge from Stefan de Vrij. And when Inter’s Nicola Barella conceded a corner, the cross went into the danger area and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic took his chance with a cool finish into the bottom corner to give Lazio a priceless win.

Earlier in the day Juventus retook top spot with a 2-0 home win against Brescia. The reigning champions have been riding their luck a little in recent weeks. Maurizio Sarris’ team nicked an equaliser against Milan in the midweek Coppa Italia clash, thanks to a late Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, and today they needed a bit of help to see off struggling Brescia who, having lost,  have drifted seven points from safety.

The relegation haunted visitors held out for most of the first half, until they went down to ten men when striker Florian Aye picked up two yellow cards within three minutes. Paulo Dybala punished the strugglers from a free kick and in the second half Juan Cuadrado doubled the lead to claim the three points.

Our latest Serie A 2020 betting odds still back I Bianconeri for a ninth successive Scudetto and this was another step along the way.

Atalanta win pulls them clear of Roma

In the fourth versus fifth clash Atalanta went six points clear of Roma with a 2-1 win over Paulo Fonseca’s side. Edin Dzeko put Roma ahead with his 11th goal of the season before Jose Palomino and Mario Pasalic hit back with two goals in ten minutes early in the second half. The hosts deserved their win, with a shots-on-target count of six to one, and Palasic’s 60th minute strike was a beauty, curled into the top corner.

Dries Mertens lead Napoli to end their Serie A match against Cagliari in a clean sheet win
Dries Mertens during Napoli’s Coppa Italia match against Inter Milan

Napoli are back in the frame for a Europa League spot after a Dries Mertens goal gave them a 0-1 win away to Cagliari. Having pushed Juventus at the top of the league over the past three seasons this has been a difficult term for Napoli, but they still have plenty to play for, and at least they are now in the right half of the league table.

Big win gives Genoa hope

There were some telling Serie A 2020 results at the bottom end of the table this weekend. Struggling Genoa had a spectacular 0-3 win away to Europa chasing Bologna thanks to goals from Adama Soumaoro, Antonio Sanabria and an injury time strike by Domenico Criscito. That win dragged 18th placed Genoa up to within a point of Sampdoria after Claudio Ranieri’s side was hammered at home by Fiorentina. La Viola went 0-5 up, with Federico Chiesa helping himself to a brace before Manolo Gabbiadino scored an injury time consolation for the beleaguered hosts.

Lecce eased their relegation worries, for this week anyway, with a 2-1 win over bottom club SPAL in a tense affair. Majer’s 66th minute effort claimed the points which lifted Lecce three points ahead of Genoa in the unwanted 18th place.

Elsewhere Parma won with the only goal of the game away to Sassuolo, while Udinese and Hellas Verona played out a goalless draw.

And tomorrow Milan hosts Torino at the San Siro in a game they will expect to win. The Rossoneri is trying to pull away from mid-table while their opponents are in danger in the relegation mix.

Take a look at the SBOBET odds for that one, Milan are well fancied at 1.55 to win, with Torino at 5.60 and the draw at 4.10
