Atalanta vs Inter Milan
Top four rivals Atalanta and Inter Milan meet at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Sunday, locked together on 27 points in fourth and fifth position, Simone Inzaghi’s Inter ahead on goal difference.
It’s a Serie A picture which changed rather significantly on Wednesday night as I Nerazzurri leapfrogged Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta, thanks to a 6-1 mauling of Bologna at the San Siro Stadium, while La Dea suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat away to Lecce. These two results have seen a shift in the latest Serie A 2022 betting odds, with Inter Milan coming into third favorites and Atalanta hovering around sixth. And football is often about momentum, which has moved in opposite directions for these two teams.
Inter will be desperate to get this game on, but Atalanta are a dangerous side at any time and the question is; can Gasperini lift his team in time for this huge test?
Talking Points
La Dea’s stars are rested
The best thing Atalanta fans can make of their let down in Lecce was that a lot of their front line players had the chance of a rest as Gasperini made wholesale changes to his starting line-up. Atalanta missed their chance to pull Napoli down into the pack last week, losing 2-1 after taking an early lead; but before that setback, La Dea had won two of the last three. But the boss tried to freshen things up this week, while resting some key players by making nine changes for the clash with Lecce.
Unfortunately, their hosts may have taken that as a bit of an insult as they started the game hovering just above the drop zone, and Lecce fought like tigers to win all three points and move up to 16th. Gasperini defended his decision, saying: “I made those changes because Merih Demiral was not fully fit and Rafael Toloi needed rest, while I wanted to test our lads on the wings and this seemed the right game to do that. The changes didn’t decide the result, but the two goals we conceded after a good start.”
La Dea’s most dangerous players on current form, Ademola Lookman with six goals and
Teun Koopmeiners with four goals, both took their places on the bench. Mario Pasalic and Ruslan Malinovskyi both started but were substituted, while veteran Colombian striker Duvan Zapata scored Atalanta’s goal against Lecce and he’ll be pushing for another start.
Inter show their teeth
After a mixed set of Serie A 2022 results in the opening couple of months, I Nerazzurri made a huge statement on Wednesday in the manner they totally dismantled Bologna, not a team which was short of the ability of confidence, a team which had just won its last four games in all competitions. After Bologna took a surprise lead in 22 minutes Inter Milan simply let rip as Edin Dzeko hit back within two minutes. Federico Dimarco with a brace, Lautaro Martinez, Hakan Calhanoglu and Robin Gosens all got on the score sheet as Inter moved up to fourth.
But Inzaghi’s team is still a whopping 11 points adrift of runaway leaders Napoli and they need to take strength from this great performance and kick on.
Martinez’s goal made it seven for the campaign for the Argentine star, while Nicolo Barella, with five goals and four assists, has been a real force in the front six. Marcelo Brozovic, the general in the middle of the park, adds the necessary game management and no little steel; he has picked up five yellow cards in eight appearances
Inter’s recent trip to Turin to face Juventus ended in disaster, with a 2-0 defeat, so Inzaghi will remind his team that their big win against Bologna, impressive though it was, is just a start.
History
Inter have won exactly half of the 48 meetings with Atalanta over the past three decades, while there have been 15 draws and nine victories for La Dea.
Both games were drawn last season, 2-2 at the San Siro and 0-0 in Bergamo.
Inter haven’t drawn any away matches in the league this season, with three wins and four losses on the road but, in terms of recent form, I Nerazzuri have the advantage with four wins and two losses from the last six games, while La Dea have won two, drawn one and lost three.
Betting Tip
The hosts are at odds of 2.71 to win this match with Inter at 2.29 and the draw at 3.11… and all three results are right in play.
Both teams will be going for all three points, any less will make a Scudetto challenge more difficult for Inter, while Atalanta have ambitions to win a top four place, and that makes this a game which won’t be short on goalmouth action.
