Hellas Verona vs Juventus
Hellas Verona are one of the teams on top of the Serie A table after the opening matchday of the 2024-25 campaign, which is a development not everybody saw coming given what they’ve been through in the past few months.
The Gialloblu had to overhaul their roster because of their complicated situation with the authorities, which almost led to relegation last season. But now, they have a chance to shock the world after last weekend’s Serie A 2024 results.
After notching a 3-0 win over Napoli last time out, Hellas Verona will host Juventus on Monday at the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium.
Like Hellas Verona, Juventus are also coming off a 3-0 win against Como to kick-start the Thiago Motta era, but the Bianconeri were dealt key injuries along the way.
Which team will stay undefeated after the second matchday? Learn more about these two teams in today’s SBOTOP preview.
Talking Points
Hellas Verona brandish a new look under new coach
The Gialloblu look a lot different than last year’s squad that finished 13th in Serie A, as they were forced to sell 12 first-team players when the Italian financial police seized 100-per cent of the team’s shares in December.
After Marco Baroni miraculously led Hellas Verona comfortably away from relegation despite their situation, he left for Lazio in the summer, and the head coaching job has been given to Paolo Zanetti, who previously managed Empoli.
Zanetti’s reign began in impressive fashion when they demolished Antonio Conte’s Napoli last time out. And the two heroes that got them the resounding victory were their two new signings, Daniel Mosquera (brace) and Dailon Livramento.
Mosquera and Livramento were playing in lower-tier leagues last season, so seeing them on the scoresheet on the first matchday is a pleasant surprise for head coach Paolo Zanetti.
And with veterans Ondrej Duda and Darko Lazovic still capable of contributing at a high level, don’t be surprised if the Gialloblu can punch above their weight and contend for European football this year.
The only drawback for Hellas Verona is that their defencive lynchpin, Suat Serdar, will remain sidelined, as he is still recovering from the injury he suffered right on the eve of the season.
Injuries could mean lineup tweaks for Juventus
Thiago Motta faces a lineup dilemma, as his two standout performers against Como, Tim Weah and Khephren Thuram, will be out in the meantime due to hamstring injuries. They will join Arthur (suspended), Fabio Miretti, and Vasilije Adzic on the absentee list.
Weah was on the scoresheet alongside Samuel Mbangula and Andrea Cambiaso, while Thuram had a good shift in midfield in their opening-day win over Como. Their absences mean that Weston McKennie and Douglas Luiz could start on Monday.
Pierre Kalulu, who joined the squad on loan from AC Milan, could make his much-awaited debut against Hellas Verona. However, with Federico Gatti and Gleison Bremer holding it down at the back, Kalulu will be coming off the bench in the meantime.
History
Juventus have won four of their last five Serie A matches against Hellas Verona (D1), keeping a clean sheet in each victory. Before that, the Old Lady failed to win once across their previous four matches against the Gialloblu in the Italian top-flight (D2, L2).
Hellas Verona are undefeated in eight of their last 10 Serie A home matches against Juventus (W3, D5, L2). During this stretch, both teams have notched 16 goals at the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium.
The Gialloblu have never recorded two consecutive victories to kick off their Serie A campaign, while Juventus haven’t done so since the 2019-20 season, the last time they won the Scudetto.
Betting Tip
The Serie A 2024 odds are smiling on the Old Lady on Monday night. Juventus are 1.72 favourites to win, whereas Hellas Verona are 4.46 underdogs, and a draw is at 3.36 in the 1X2 market.
While the hosts can make life difficult for the visitors, Juventus should be able to come away with the maximum points because they have a stronger squad overall, hence our recommended bet above.
Other than going for another Juventus victory, football fans can also go for a high-scoring game, based on their recent encounter and the proactive styles of play under their new managers.
A Correct Score of 2-2 – the result of their previous meeting in February – has a generous offer of 20.00, while alternatives like Total Goal 2-3 at 1.97, Over 2.00 at 1.59, Over 2.25 at 1.85, and Over 2.50 at 2.16 should be considered too.
