Serie A: Fiorentina’s European Hopes Hanging in the Balance

Fiorentina vs Juventus

Fiorentina can decide their European fate for next season when they’ll host Juventus on Saturday for their final Serie A match of the 2021/2022 season.

La Viola are currently at 7th with 59 points – which is level with eight-seeded Atalanta and good for a Europa Conference League berth. However, they can go higher with a Europa League spot should they win against I Bianconeri.

Meanwhile, Juventus may have fallen short of winning the Scudetto yet again, but they’re assured of a Champions League spot since they’re at fourth place with 70 points.

Vincenzo Italiano’s side has more incentive to go all-out in this match while Max Allegri’s men do not which is why they’re being favoured by the pre-match SBOTOP betting odds to win in this contest.

Talking Points

Fiorentina not in their best form

Lazio look set to confirm their Europa League spot, which leaves Roma, Fiorentina, and Atalanta all vying for the second and final berth.

Out of the three, Atalanta have the best recent form with two wins, two draws, and one loss in their last five and they have a winnable match against 14th-placed Empoli. Roma, meanwhile, are winless in their last five and they’ll take on an improved Torino squad.

On paper, the odds are stacked against Fiorentina and they must buckle up to take on, not only a stronger side in Juventus, but also an old friend in Dusan Vlahovic – who gave the Old Lady a major makeover last winter.

Matching or even suppressing I Bianconeri’s firepower will be key for La Viola, but their recent outings don’t offer much encouragement in that regard – including their recent losses against Udinese and Sampdoria where they’ve scored once and surrendered eight goals.

Top scorers Nicolas Gonzalez and Giacomo Bonaventura have shown flashes with 10 goals and 10 assists total, but they need to do more against a well-drilled Juventus team.

Perhaps getting additional production from others should do the trick for Vincenzo Italiano. Jose Callejon and Krzysztof Piatek both came off the bench against Sampdoria last week and they’ll contend for starting spots, while Lucas Torreira is also going to play a huge role as their attacking midfielder.

Juventus say goodbye to their heroes

Giorgio Chiellini and Paulo Dybala will not be playing with Juventus in the next Serie A season
Juventus’ Giorgio Chiellini and Paulo Dybala react after the match

When Juventus played Lazio in their final home game of the season, there were emotional scenes on the pitch as they bid farewell to two of their tenured players in Giorgio Chiellini and Paulo Dybala.

Chiellini – who played 17 seasons for Juve – was given a standing ovation by the crowd as he was substituted on the 17th minute to represent his time with the club. The 37-year-old captain has played 560 matches since his arrival in 2004, winning nine Serie A titles and five Italian Cups.

Dybala, on the other hand, was moved to tears on his final substitution during the 78th minute. He joined Juve from Palermo in 2015 and won five consecutive Serie A titles along with four Italian Cups.

Those two are going to represent I Bianconeri one more time this weekend. Los Angeles FC have reportedly made an offer to Chiellini but he remains undecided, while Dybala is apparently being sought after by the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle, and Tottenham.

History

In their 165 league meetings prior to Sunday, I Bianconeri have the clear advantage in the head-to-heads with 79 victories, while La Viola have won in 34 along with 52 draws.

Fiorentina have only won two of their last 16 Serie A matches against Juventus (D3, L11) and their last home victory against them came in 2017.

However, these two sides have drawn their last two league encounters at the Artemio Franchi Stadium. Fiorentina and Juventus have only drawn more Serie A matches in a row at the hosts’ venue from 1935 to 1940 (four consecutive).

Juventus have beaten Fiorentina thrice already this term with an aggregate tally of 4-0. Juan Cuadrado’s late goal won them their reverse fixture last November, while they’ve beaten La Viola 3-0 during their two-legged Coppa Italia semi-finals tie.

Betting Tip

Despite having worse recent form, Fiorentina are being backed by the Serie A 2022 odds to win. La Viola are installed at 2.01, while Juve are priced at 3.70 and chances for a draw are at 3.30 in the 1X2 market. We aren’t really sure on who’ll win this fixture and we’re not confident on La Viola’s chances, but we feel that this will be a close fight that will have limited Serie A 2022 highlights – making Under 3.00 @ 1.81 your best bet.
