Inter Milan vs Juventus
After another great week of Champions League action what a weekend of domestic football we have in store in the top leagues across Europe.
El Clasico is the headline grabber in Spain, Premier League leaders Liverpool visit third placed Arsenal and in Serie A, second plays third as Inter Milan host Juventus. I Nerazzurri are a point ahead of the Old Lady and two behind leaders Napoli so this Derby d’Italia is as compelling as it could be. Napoli will be hoping for a draw in Milan and that wouldn’t be a disaster for either team, though the hosts will really be looking for a victory.
Simone Inzaghi’s Inter come into the game on the back of a last minute 1-0 win away to Young Boys in the Champions League while Thiago Motta’s Juventus lost by the same score line at home to VfB Stuttgart. Both teams are in decent form in the league but neither has been full of goals recently to I’m expecting a battle of attrition; and it won’t be one for the feint-hearted.
The Serie A 2024 betting odds have been consistently behind I Nerazzurri this season and the current price of 1.57 puts them well clear of Napoli at 4.00, Juventus at 6.00 and AC Milan making up the top four at a SBOTOP price of 13.00. Whatever the result in Milan we will see a small movement in the odds and if the Old Lady can master a victory the gap will narrow.
Talking Points
Inter waiting on Acerbi and Calhanoglu
I Nerazzurri navigated a tricky match away to Roma last week thanks to a Lautaro Martinez goal; but the win came at a cost as attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu and centre back Francesco Acerbi picked up injuries and both are doubtful for this crunch Derby d’Italia. They are in a race against time to be fit after each leaving the field in the first half, Calhanoglu after just 12 minutes. Acerbi was soon after replaced by Stefan de Vrij and the experienced Dutch defender played in the match against Young Boys. And De Vrij blasted his team for the lacklustre display in a Champions League game they were expected to win comfortably. The teams went into second half injury time at 0-0 and it was the 93rd minute when Marcus Thuram eventually broke the Swiss resistance to win the game. The 27 year old France striker is having his best season so far with seven league goals and when he strikes up a relationship with Martinez the pair could well be devastating.
Juve’s first defeat comes at a bad time
The Old Lady’s Serie A 2024 results under Motta are probably as good as he would have hoped with four wins and four draws to be the only team in the Italian top flight still unbeaten. But a European loss at home to VfB Stuttgart came at a bad time with this difficult task ahead of them. While results have been good I Bianconeri had their fair share of luck during their 1-0 win over Lazio last week , needing an own goal to win the game despite playing for more than an hour against ten men after Lazio defender Alessio Romagnoli had been sent off.
And Motta too has injury concerns as the match-up with Inter seems to be too early for attacking midfielder Teun Koopmeiners and winger Nico Gonzalez. Both were injured before the international break and neither has progressed as quickly as hoped and Juventus will travel to Milan without them. Both Koopmeiners and Gonzalez have been important figures in the Old Lady’s attacking unit, which now relies more than ever on Serbian hitman Dusan Vlahovic, who is top scoring with five goals.
History
With 33 victories to 19 Juventus have had much the better of the head to heads over the past 30 years but last season, on their way to the 2024 Scudetto, Inter won their home game against Juve 1-0 while drawing 1-1 in Turin.
Recent form favours the hosts who have won five and lost one of the last six while Juve have won three, drawn two and lost one; though Juventus are unbeaten away from home in four games.
Betting Tip
With Inter Milan available at 1.79 the hosts have a clear edge over I Bianconeri priced at 4.19 and the draw is at 3.18. The Double Chance: Juve or Draw is at odds of 2.10 and the price on Juventus with a +0.50 advantage is similar at 2.13.
It’s going to be a tight game and none of the last six meetings between these two titans has yielded over 2.50 goals, and neither have Inter’s last two games or Juventus’ last three.
