Serie A: The Old Lady Welcome the New Kids on the Block

Juventus vs Como

The most decorated team in Serie A history will start their season against a newly promoted side that aren’t to be underestimated.

Como are backed by the Hartono family—Indonesia’s wealthiest family—and have a genius in Cesc Fabregas for a manager. Meanwhile, I Bianconeri are hoping for a return to the top of Serie A under new coach Thiago Motta.

It will be an exciting matchday 1 for the Italian top flight, and I can’t wait to see what this season has in store for us.

So, without further ado, let’s dissect this meeting, shall we?

Talking Points

Can Thiago Motta wake the sleeping giants?

For the longest time, Juventus have been the gold standard in terms of glory in Italian football. They have won the most Serie A, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana titles in history. Their dominance in the league was such that even in the presence of other strong and historic clubs like Milan, Inter, Napoli and Roma, snatching the Scudetto away from the ‘Old Lady’ is always a monumental task.

But like all things, change is imminent, and no one stays at the top forever. Despite winning the league for nine straight years (2011/12-2019/20), Juventus have found themselves on the outside looking in for the past four seasons.

Although their former coach—Massimiliano Allegri—had brought them past success, I Bianconeri had found themselves playing a style of football that often grinds the fans’ gears and at the same time, delivers underwhelming results.

And so, a new age must be ushered in. Enter Thiago Motta.

In his first summer window with the club, the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder did a fire sale and allowed numerous players to go. Wojciech Szczesny, Adrien Rabiot, Moise Kean, Matias Soule and Dean Hujisen have all left the club.

There are also those who remain at the club, but have already been given the marching orders. Weston Mckennie, Daniele Rugani and Mattia De Sciglio are some of the names listed. The most surprising, however, is the inclusion of Federico Chiesa.

The forward has been with the club since 2020, and was once rated as a future superstar. Things have not pan out as well as people had hoped, and Chiesa now finds himself looking for a new team.

Motta’s new signings, on the other hand, can offer a much-needed boost for a team dying for yet another taste at Serie A’s summit.

Douglas Luiz, Khephren Thuram, Michele Di Gregorio and Juan Cabal headline the players coming in at the Allianz Stadium next season.

Como will hope for a successful Serie A return

Como will need Raphael Varane to be at his best when they take on Juventus in Serie A

The last time I Lariani played in Serie A was back in the 2002/03 season. It has been a long time coming, but alas, one of the most beautiful backdrops in European football is back in Italy’s top flight.

Como finished Serie B last season in second, and despite their capacity in the second tier of Italian football, they are in no rush to get back immediately.

Over the summer, Fabregas secured the services of players with the quality needed for the lakeside club to avoid relegation.

Andrea Belotti, Raphael Varane, Alberto Dossena, Alberto Morena and Pepe Reina are some of the names that have proven their worth in the past, and must now make sure to steer Como in the right direction.

History

Although I Lariani are newcomers for this season, their past ventures in Serie A haven’t been awful. They finished sixth twice, and have stayed for 14 seasons overall.

The last time both clubs have faced each other in Serie A was back in the 2002/03 season—obviously, the last time Como were in the league.

The first match ended in a 1-1 draw, whilst Juventus clinched a 1-3 win in the reverse fixture.

Betting Tip

I know seeing Como as the 7.70 underdogs, with the squad they have plus Fabregas as the coach, may look enticing. Perhaps you think Patrick Cutrone and Andrea Belotti can penetrate through and give Como fans an unforgettable opening-day winner. Or that they play an absolutely beautiful game orchestrated by their coach, who himself played like an artist back in his day.

No such thing will happen.

One of their biggest signings, Raphael Varane, got injured in his pre-season debut with the club, and according to Serie A 2024 updates, it’s still unsure whether or not he’ll feature on the matchday squad.

There’s a reason why the SBOTOP Serie A 2024 odds have them as the huge underdogs in this match. Heed my advice and take the sensible bet. Otherwise, you’d just be throwing away your cash.
