Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea
Jesse Lingard climbed off the bench to give Manchester United a priceless victory as they reclaimed second place on a frustrating day for Chelsea.
The win means betting odds on the Red Devils achieving a top four place have been slashed, while some of us in the sports betting world are beginning to wonder about Antonio Conte’s champions. The Blues played the better football in the first half but head back to London empty handed and in fifth place.
Betting tips on Chelsea were looking good as the visitors dominated the opening exchanges and Alvaro Morata crashed a volley against the hosts’ crossbar when he perhaps should have scored. And in a half where the Blues played some nice attacking football, Willian gave them a deserved lead, beating David de Gea at his near post on 32 minutes.
Alexis Sanchez missed a sitter for the host soon after but Romelu Lukaku showed he can score against the big teams, especially against his former employers, firing home from close range after smart work from Sanchez. Eden Hazard almost restored Chelsea’s lead immediately but United held on to go in all square at the break.
The second half was more evenly contested and with a quarter of the game remaining Lukaku drew a superb save from Thibaut Courtois with a lovely volley. It began to look like both teams may be happy with a point and Conte took off his star man Hazard. But he regretted his decision almost immediately when Jesse Lingard headed smartly home from a Lukaku cross.
As Chelsea tried to rescue a point, Morata’s late effort was ruled offside and when the final whistle blew the Old Trafford roof came off. Jose’s smiling again.
