This is the way football works!

Honduras 1-1 Costa Rica

Honduras could have defied betting odds and gotten all three points following a lively start. The same goes for online betting favourites Costa Rica who have, once again, failed to capitalise on multiple scoring opportunities early in the game. However, as the saying goes, el futbol es asi – that’s the way football is.

In the end, the two teams have to settle for a draw, just like their latest meeting at the Copa Centroamerica.

Sure enough, it wasn’t the ideal result for both sides who suffered losses in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying football games last week, but having a point is better than having none at all.

Honduras had fewer chances to score, but they deservingly took the lead midway through the first half with Anthony Lozano getting a free kick right in front of the net. Tico goalie Keylor Navas initially blocked the shot, but Lozano was alert and went for the rebound to cash in with the goal.

On the other hand, despite dominating for the most part, the Costa Ricans struggled to finish on the net – a problem that has also troubled them in their 2-0 loss to Mexico. Fortunately, they got some boost from Kendall Waston who was favoured to start over Francisco Calvo.

Waston provided La Sele with more toughness on the defensive end, even stopping a 12th-minute threat from the Hondurans after Navas left the goal wide open. The Vancouver Whitecaps defender then turned into a lifesaver come the second after he headed home the equaliser from a Christian Bolaños cross.

Indeed, the results could have been different if not for some poor officiating in the first half, with the referees failing to call a penalty in favour of Costa Rica only to make up for it later by not calling a fault that would have helped Honduras.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t overshadow the fact that Honduras and Costa Rica’s performances are far from their best. Not even close.

The stalemate kept Costa Rica in second with seven points while Honduras climbed to fourth, level with Panama but behind on goal differential.
