Brazil 3-0 Chile
A brace from Gabriel Jesus sent Brazil to Russia in style while condemning a talented Chile side to watch next summer from the sidelines.
While Lionel Messi was grabbing the headlines in Ecuador, another world superstar, Alexis Sanchez, was coming to terms with his side’s devastating defeat, while the future of Brazil, and Manchester City, continued to shine.
At pre-match betting odds of 1.81, Brazil were always likely to dominate, but Chile held out hopes of turning betting tips on their head and grabbing a result which could see them progress. The South American group football games didn’t go their way, though; and when Paulinho seized on a mistake by Chile keeper Claudio Bravo, the writing was on the wall.
There’s not a lot you can do when Brazil are on their game and an amazing piece of skill from PSG star Neymar laid Jesus’ first goal on a plate. Chile became desperate and threw caution to the wind, but with no luck. And in a last throw of the dice, Bravo joined a late attack only to see the move break down for Jesus to outpace him to his own net and make it three.
So we won’t see Alexis Sanchez in Russia next year. It hasn’t been a happy couple of months for the Arsenal star as he watched Peru sneak in the play-off place with a draw against Colombia, ahead of Chile on goal difference.
It’s a different story for Brazil, though, and they’ll go to Russia with supreme confidence and, of course, Jesus on their side.
