Argentina vs Brazil
The two giants of South American football are set to clash again in a top two bout of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers, and it’s all set up the be a cracker!
World Cup 2022: Argentina vs Brazil will always be one of the most watched fixtures in world football and this match is no different. Both teams arrive on the back of narrow 1-0 victories, Argentina won away to Uruguay while Brazil navigated a tough home fixture against Colombia. That result means the Selecao have booked their place for the 2022 World Cup, with 34 points from 12 games while Argentina are close to joining them on 28 points.
The Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario will be bouncing as the Argentina fans hope to roar their heroes on to qualification.
Talking Points
Messi likely to start
Argentina moved ever closer to Qatar 2022 with their victory over Uruguay and there were encouraging signs for fans as talisman Lionel Messi came on for the final 15 minutes. The PSG star has been nursing a knee injury but he came through his cameo unscathed and head coach Lionel Scaloni may be tempted to start him for this vital clash. Either Lautaro Martinez or Paulo Dybala will drop to the bench to make way, and it’s likely that Messi might make his exit prior to the 90 minute mark, depending on how he looks and the game situation. Martinez has a good case to keep his place having scored 17 goals in his 34 appearances for the Albiceleste but Scaloni has a nice dilemma.
Winger Angel Di Maria is likely to start having scored the winner against Uruguay with a sweet shot from the edge of the penalty area, and that strike left Argentina 12 points ahead of fifth-placed Colombia. Atletico Madrid’s Rodrigo de Paul should get the nod too and he’ll provide good support the front men as Messi tries to add to his six goals in the tournament.
Brazil can pack their bags for Qatar
Tite’s Brazil have completed their business having come through a home game against a very competitive Colombia side as Lucas Paqueta scored the only goal of the game. The victory was Brazil’s 11th in 12 matches which puts them well out of reach of the chasing pack and they now have their sights set on Qatar. And that means that Tite has the opportunity to shuffle his pack and look at some of the players who are on the cusp of demanding a starting place. Leeds United’s Raphinha is once such star who has emerged this year, and Tite will want another look at him, while Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus will hope to nail down his position alongside top scorer Neymar.
But there won’t be too many changes as, having lost the Copa America final to Argentina this year, the Selecao will be keen to exact revenge and to snuff out any chance of losing the top spot. We may see Real Madrid’s in form striker Vinicius Junior alongside Jesus and that would make an exciting front two to keep Neymar in his toes.
History
These two nations are the kings of South American football. Argentina are 15 times Copa America winners and twice World Cup winners, while Brazil have won nine Copa America’s and five World Cups.
The Selecao have had the better of the head-to-head Argentina vs Brazil results, winning 15 of the 24 encounters since 1974, while Argentina have won seven and there have been four draws.
Of course, the last meeting ended Argentina’s 28 year trophy drought as the Albiceleste beat Brazil 1-0 in the 2021 Copa America final as Di Maria took a long pass from De Paul and lobbed Brazil keeper Ederson to win South America’s flagship tournament. They also won the previous game 1-0, a friendly fixture in 2019. Can Scaloni’s men make it three from three? Well, we’ll have a look at the latest Argentina vs Brazil betting odds and make a shout.
There’s little to choose between the two teams in terms of recent form. Argentina are unbeaten in their six home games in qualifying while Brazil are unbeaten in 22 away matches in all competitions; and both teams have won five and drawn one of the last six games.
Betting Tip
Argentina vs Brazil | 1X2 Draw @ 3.00 | |
November 17, 7:30 (GMT+8) |
At SBOTOP odds of 2.34, the hosts are marginal favourites to win this epic clash while Brazil are available at 2.92. It promises to be a great watch for the neutral as Argentina go for qualification and Brazil aim to hold on to their top spot, and I think the two teams will cancel each other out.
For a Correct Score-line, 1-1 is the most likely outcome at odds of 4.84.
