The Cleveland Browns are the laughing stock of the NFL after enduring a 0-16 record in the 2017 season. Their winless 2017 season made them the no-brainer choice for the first overall pick of the 2018 Draft. With the first pick, they chose another quarterback in Baker Mayfield.
There is little to no doubt that Mayfield is a quality football player, but the question is this: is he the catalyst that will turn their fortunes around?
The Browns had a dire need for a solid quarterback to build their offence around. DeShone Kizer didn’t cut it in his debut campaign with the Browns: his 11 touchdowns this season was overshadowed by his 22 interceptions. His pass completion rate of 53.6% also leaves much to be desired.
What the Browns get in Mayfield is a Heisman-winning passer that can definitely sling the pigskin well. In his final year at Oklahoma, he had an incredible stat-line of 43 TDs, 6 INTs, 4627 yards and a 70.5% completion rate.
However, his biggest problem is that he is mainly a pocket passer. He rarely rushed outside of the pocket during his college career, and that could be a problem when you have a leaky offensive line to protect you. Kizer alone suffered 38 sacks in his lone campaign with the Browns.
It will be interesting if Mayfield will be able to live up to the heavy expectations of Browns fans and critics.
