Spain dominated the year-end ATP rankings in 2022. 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz shocked the world as he became the youngest-ever player to finish the year at No. 1. And just behind him was 36-year-old Rafael Nadal, who had another sensational season with two more Grand Slam titles to his name.
Nadal has consistently been among the top-ranked players in the world, finishing in the Top 2 of the year-end rankings 13 times in his 16 years as a pro.
And Alcaraz’s sudden emergence as one of the top tennis players in the world looks set to extend Spain’s dominance atop the ATP Tour for years to come. Although, a certain Djoker may have something to say about that.
Read on below as SBOTOP takes a closer look at the two sensational Spaniards and their prospects moving forward.
Rafa Nadal still really good at 36
Somehow, someway, Rafael Nadal is still going at 36. After an injury-hit 2021 season, the Spaniard returned to form in 2022 as he won the Australian Open.
And he followed that up with his record 14th French Open title despite needing injections and other drugs before every match.
Nadal’s season could have been much better, but injuries again took their toll. He had to withdraw from the semi-finals of Wimbledon due to an abdominal tear.
He was able to return in time for the US Open, but he again aggravated that abdominal injury and fell in the fourth round, his earliest exit at Flushing Meadows since 2016. And he was also visibly hampered by the injury in his disappointing run at the Nitto ATP Finals.
As Nadal’s body continues to break down and his already long list of injuries grows even longer, it remains to be seen just how long he can stay at the top of his game.
But it’s clear that when reasonably fit, Nadal is still right there among the best in the game. And if he can manage his body a bit better and avoid any more serious injuries, he could very well spend a couple more years at the very top.
Alcaraz’s astonishing rise
On the other hand, 2022 could very well be the beginning of a decade of Carlos Alcaraz dominance. The 19-year-old took the ATP Tour by storm as he won five titles – Rio, Miami, Barcelona, Madrid, and of course, defied the ATP 2022 odds to claim his first Grand Slam title in the US Open.
Alcaraz has quickly matured into an absolutely incredible physical specimen. His combination of speed and power is unmatched in the ATP Tour at the moment. And he uses all of his immense physical gifts to his advantage as he plays an aggressive style that makes it hard for his opponents to cope.
And as if his overpowering physicality weren’t enough, Alcaraz has also developed tremendous skill and touch, not to mention incredible mental strength. This combination of qualities is simply unheard-of for someone so young, and that is what makes Alcaraz so special.
Alcaraz’s amazing physical and mental attributes were on full display in his run at the US Open. He found himself in three gruelling five-set battles in a row – against Marin Cilic, Jannik Sinner, and Frances Tiafoe – but somehow still had more than enough left in the tank to take care of Casper Ruud in the final.
It’s hard to believe someone with this particular set of skills and qualities is only 19 years of age. The best is clearly still to come from the young Spaniard, who has the potential to dominate the ATP Tour for the next decade or so as Nadal did.
Djokovic set to duel with Spaniards
But as good as Nadal and Alcaraz are, their dominance is by no means guaranteed as there are several other excellent players on tour who will be keen to bring them down.
There is of course Novak Djokovic, who is still the best tennis player in the world. Djokovic finished a distant fifth, his lowest year-end ranking since 2017, despite winning the Nitto ATP Final. But there were mitigating circumstances to that low ranking, including not getting any points for his win at Wimbledon, as well as his absences from the Australian Open and the major US tournaments due to his vaccination status.
But at age 35, Djokovic is still as good as he’s ever been. He does not have nearly the same injury history as his rival Nadal and takes care of his body fairly well, so he will certainly give the Spaniards a run for their money in the coming years.
While Djokovic-Nadal matches are always great to watch, seeing the battles between Djokovic and Alcaraz will be so fresh and exciting. The teenage Spaniard got the better of Djokovic in their first meeting at the Madrid Masters, which was full of ATP 2022 highlights. It was as close as could be with two tie-breakers, and Alcaraz came from a set down to beat Djokovic in three sets.
It will be a real pleasure to see a few more of those classic encounters in the coming years. After supplanting Nadal as Spain’s top player, Alcaraz will now be coming for Djokovic’s crown as the best tennis player in the world.
