World No.1 meets World No.2 in a high-stakes live betting affair that will give the winner her first-ever Grand Slam title.
Both online betting darlings haven’t won a major singles trophy, but that is about to end for one of them as the Australian Open title is now up for grabs. There’s also the incentive of topping the WTA rankings, with Wozniacki able to topple Halep with the victory.
While most fans would easily favour the top-seeded Halep to reign supreme, betting odds suggest that the matchup will be a tight one that could well go down as a classic.
Wozniacki made a strong statement in the semi-finals against Elise Mertens, taking down the Melbourne debutant in straight sets. Mertens tried to fight back in the second frame, but Wozniacki showed that she’s ready for the big event as she displayed consistency and held her nerves to win.
Halep, meanwhile, displayed a near flawless performance in the quarter-finals against Karolina Pliskova. Sure enough, she had a hard time against former No.1 Angelique Kerber—needing three sets, 35 games and almost two and half hours to secure her ticket to this stage—but she proved in that match that she’s no longer the player that chokes on important battles.
Considering their head-to-head record, Wozniacki has the edge. The Dane won their last three meetings, the latest in the WTA Finals in Singapore where she took down the Romanian in just 14 games.
Rest could also play a role in this final given that Halep had a more taxing semi-final as compared to Wozniacki.
Nonetheless, Halep is the highest-rated female star for a reason. Her mentality has always been an issue, but she has been a lot more positive recently as seen in her brilliant performance and much-improved body language in the tournament.
Not to mention that she packs more power—a weapon that could be the decisive factor considering that they can both run and chase down balls.
Indeed, this is anyone’s game now. However, while Wozniacki is capable, I like the chances of Halep winning on Game Handicap -2.50 @ 2.02 especially with the visible improvements she has shown so far.
