The 2016 WTA season ended with Angelique Kerber at the top of the WTA Singles rankings. The German traded blows with the ever-dominant Serena Williams in all of the important competitions, so she definitely deserves her current ranking.
She came into the 2017 Australian Open as the heavy favourite of many betting websites. Handicap betting vets trusted her abilities, and betting tips were expecting another Kerber-Williams final.

If Venus plays her cards right, we will be drifting closer to what would be the last Williams-Williams final we will ever see.
Williams and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova had their share of interesting matches on hard surfaces, with Venus winning three of their five clashes. However, the 36-year-old will be depending a lot on her shot power to prevent the young Russian from making her run. If Anastasia manages to tire her out, the elder Williams will be out of what might be her last Australian Open.

Karolina Pliskova vs Mirjana Lucic-Baroni
Mirjana Lucic-Baroni will be in for a fight when she faces World no. 3 Karolina Pliskova.
Pliskova is 10 years younger than her opponent and will be using very aggressive tennis to get the better of her. However, her low success rate at her first serves should become a target for the seasoned Croatian. If she manages to unnerve the Czech, the game could become winnable for her.
Johanna Konta vs Serena Williams
Serena Williams is the obvious favourite to win this game after Kerber’s elimination, but it’s wrong to dismiss Johanna Konta. Barbora Strycova gave the Brit an idea on how to keep the game from getting out of control. What can also help the younger Konta is the fact that Williams hasn’t faced her before; if she manages to keep the American uncomfortable and unable to find her groove, she has a good shot at advancing to the semi-final.
