The men’s competition of the 2017 Rogers Cup will lack the star power that was advertised coming into the season, but what’s brewing in Montreal is a lot more exciting with two legends leading the storyline.

Of course, the tournament still won’t be that easy for the two top seeds considering that they will also face 2016 Rogers Cup runner-up Kei Nishikori, French star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, top Americans John Isner, Jack Sock and Sam Querrey, as well as a number of rising stars like Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios.
There’s also the threat of World No.10 Milos Raonic who will lead the group of Canadian players – Vasek Pospisil, Denis Shapovalov, Peter Polansky and Brayden Schnur – looking to make history as the first player to win on home soil in the open era.
Sure enough, at this stage of their careers, Nadal and Federer put more importance on Grand Slam titles than rankings. Nonetheless, reaching No.1 should be an icing on the cake of what has been and what continues to be a sensational renaissance for them.
This is not to write off other participants, but if they want to beat the two tennis icons, they have to put more effort than before. This tournament is about Nadal and Federer after all.
